Chapter Five- Not so crazy after all

To say I was stunned would be the understatement of the year. I was more than stunned. I was flabbergasted.

“Human?” I repeated dully, trying to figure out if this was one of my hallucinations or if everything that was happening was actually real.

He seemed to get more and more impatient with every passing second. I was definitely sure that he was the best-looking guy I’ve ever seen, but his bossy attitude and his no-nonsense manners were annoying me. And now this ridiculous question.

“Yes, are you human?” his voice was thick with irritation and a hint of a British accent seemed to break through.

“Yes, I believe I am. And this is not funny at all.” Some of my earlier fear came back, and a shiver ran down my spine. I’ve never considered those people to be mad, ironically enough, but now, in regard of his strange question, I was seriously beginning to doubt his sanity and my safety in this place. My headache wasn’t making my mood any better, and a bubble of panic, sheer and strong panic, was forming in my chest. Damien had vacated my mind, leaving me alone in the worst possible moment. I was about to lose it, and lose it hard.

The guy studied me carefully, and then he voiced, more to himself than to me, “You’re actually telling the truth…”

He gave me a pensive look, assessing me with a frown that suggested that he had no idea what to think of me. My teeth began chattering, and my mind began clouding over.

“Let me go!” I wailed, and began thrashing and trying to get my wrists free, which resulted in the binds gouging deeply into my skin. I let out a scream of rage, pain, frustration and fear, the sound so shrill that my own ears hurt.

He seemed stunned by my sudden outburst and took a step toward me. My voice rose an octave as I tried to back away from him, which only resulted in knocking my chair down, so I fell, head first, to the ground. In a flash, he was beside me, righting up my chair. I kicked at him wildly, still shrieking. He looked perplexed and slightly annoyed as he avoided my blows effortlessly.

Enough!” he ordered, and his voice held such a strong authority and an underlying tone of menace that I stopped fighting altogether, collapsing limply in my chair.

“Let me go…” I murmured hoarsely, as a familiar ache began throbbing behind my eyes. I was not going to cry. Not in front of him. Not now.

He sighed, and ran a hand down his face, looking at me with the wary look of a parent tired of his child’s tantrums.

“Layton,” he then said, still looking at me, “I think I might need your assistance.”

A portion of the wall slid open and another man walked in. He was the other man standing on the steps with the eye-patch guy.

He looked cheerful and smiled at me flirtatiously, a grin that confused me even further. Now that was a drastic change of methods. His chestnut hair was slightly tousled, and his blue eyes gleamed mischievously, as he gave his companion an amused look. His presence seemed to give the room a peaceful vibe that had not been there before. I felt immediately more safe.

“Not having much success, I see,” he said, his deep voice arousing thoughts of liquid honey in my mind. Then he turned his gaze to me, all grinning and easy-going.
