Chapter Three- And so the trouble came…

The city was an even more astounding sight without my meds. As I stared at the buildings, I could see wines running up the chrome and glass, finding hold in some invisible gaps where metal met shining glass. I knew only I could see that. Everyone else saw ordinary sky-scrapers, jutting out toward the blue sky.

But as always, the people were the most amazing.

Some covered in fur, others with pointy ears and others with completely white eyes- no irises, no pupils. All products of my imagination. Or of my manic-depression, according to doctors.

I could feel Damien’s nervousness as I took in the totally new sights. He surveyed the people anxiously, warily.

What’s up? I asked, genuinely surprised.

You should’ve taken your meds, he said, his tone tortured.

I rolled my eyes, and continued walking.

You’re no fun today, Damien, I scolded. Aren’t you happy to be back… to be with me?

I am… I am, he said, his voice lacking any enthusiasm.

The hell you are.

The conversation ended there.

When I arrived at Greene’s, and met Paris at our usual spot in the cafeteria, she immediately noticed my better humour.

“So… tell me, what happened to make you all… giddy like this? It’s a guy, isn’t it? It has to be! Tell me! Tell me!” she chanted as I sat on the edge of the fountain’s basin, next to her.

“It’s a guy… in a way,” I admitted with a smirk. “But it’s nothing romantic. He’s just a good buddy, that’s all.”

“C’mon… you really think I’d believe that?” she snorted, elbowing me in the ribs. “How is he?”

“He’s nice,” I said, purposefully being lame.

Come on, Nina, I’m not just nice… Damien’s voice chirped sarcastically in my mind. I’m so much more than just nice. Go on and tell her about my killer looks.

I refused to tell her more, even though she budged me incessantly. I kept telling her that Damien was just a good friend. Because, truthfully, that was all he was. My very best friend- since always.

And so the day passed, every sight more vivid than usual, every sound louder and clearer, and every thought blissfully madder.

Concentrating was impossible, and I couldn’t recall one single thing any teacher had said. All through classes, I’ve been too busy chattering with Damien, oblivious to the people sitting around me, or to the banter of professors, who looked especially strange, with skin tones that varied from gold to silver, some covered in strange scale-like skin, others with slanted pupils, their eyes shining like cats’.

At the end of the day, I wanted to go around town, to spend the energy that now seemed to burn me from the inside.

Paris was waiting for me on the stairs that lead to the entrance of the Academy, talking animatedly with a group of friends. I ran down the steps and came to a halt in front of her.
