"And the keys are underneath the mat?...okay. Thanks, Ryan, I owe you one" I spoke with the phone between my ear and shoulder. It was a habit I should really stop doing before I end up getting arrested for it.
"Add that to the long list of things you owe me." Ryan replied.
"...you sure you can't come?" I asked for what must have been the millionth time today as I looked to my side at Amelia who was busy texting on her phone to pay attention to my conversation.
"I'm still spewing my guts from dinner last night...I'm never eating fish...ever...again"
"Kenji too...this is why you don't eat things that have spikes for skin" I suppress a small laugh.
"Laugh it up, go on. I know you want to."
"You really think I'm that heartless? That I'd laugh at how stupid you are to eat that deformed looking fish?" I smiled at the thought.
"YOO" Phred called out from the back seat of the one of the Geo Trackers I had rented out to use in San Diego. "SLOW. THE. FUCK. DOWN."
"I'm going at a snail's pace" I called back. "Do you NOT want to make it to San Diego before the next Ice Age?"
"Just try not to kill us, okay?" Phred practically begged. "And tell Ryan I wish he was driving this car"
"Yo, Ry. I have to go, Phred says he misses your manly muscles"
"Fuck you!" Phred laughed.
"But seriously, rest up, take your meds, get better because next time we go out of L.A. you're coming." I said into my phone as I turned into the familiar road I had driven to weeks before but for entirely different reasons.
"Thanks, you'll have fun without me, and try not to go too fast, Hamilton." Ryan laughed and I clicked off my phone as I pulled the car to a stop.
"So Tina lives here?" Phred asked. Like someone had just said her name instead, Amelia's head whipped up taking a look at our surroundings, probably trying to find some things to critique.
"...think so." I told Phred pretending sound unsure. I couldn't exactly say Yeah, this is definitely where Tina lives, because they'll ask why I know that and I couldn't exactly reply: Oh yeah, this one time I went to her place at one in the morning begging for her forgiveness for not telling her I had a girlfriend and then slept with her.
"Looks like the place where Jason used to live..." Phred said speaking of a friend and old band mate of ours.
"...huh, I think you're right" I said and saw Jamareo, Phil and Brian pull up in the other Geo Tracker from my rear-view mirror. "I'll just let Tina and the others know we're here." I said to them once they pulled up next to us.
Normal people would have called using phone to let their presence be known, or even go up to the door and ring the intercom, but not me.
Nope.
Never.
I opened the door and leaned out of the car and pressed my hand the horn.
"Whoa!." Phred laughed over the noise.
"Bruno! I'm going to go deaf!" Amelia shouted at me and I barely spared a glance as I looked out to Tina's apartment building trying to identify which windows belonged to her. Soon enough I saw her and Kendra look out a window pretty close to the one I had suspected as being hers. I waved my hand once they looked my way before disappearing back through the window.
"Better hope her neighbours don't file a complaint" Phred commented.
"Pssht, I've got the feeling that Tina's neighbors aren't the type to complain about a noise disturbances no matter what the time" Memories of the last time I had been here flooding through me as I said the words. Even weeks later it still stung in my chest how things ended up between us though I should be glad that Tina even wanted me to come on her road trip.
