Chapter 2: On the Balcony in Summer Air.
∞ Leonardo’s PoV ∞
“C’mon. For the hell of it, Leo. You never turn down a good party,” my , Mitchel was arranging to get us into the exclusive ball being held for the princess to find a suitor.
“It’s the princess we’re talking about here. Heir to the throne,”
I was wary of his antics, but I knew he was good. If anyone could pull this off, it would be him.
“Yea, so what? We’re not going to be chosen, Leo. We’re going for the party. Besides, It’s a masquerade. They’ll be none the wiser,”
“Fine, Mitch. I guess I’m in.” I smiled, succumbing to his insistent begging.
“I knew it! You won’t regret this one, Leo. You’ll be thanking me one day. Mark my words. Remember this conversation,”
I immediately began to regret this decision. It was always a ride and half when Mitch was involved . I owed him my life though. Since my parents had died a few years ago in a tragic accident and I was an only child, Mitch had been my only family. He’d always been there for me , we were like brothers more than cousins.
For the first time my thoughts turned to this princess. I could use a bride, especially one of her stature. I’d seen pictures of her, and I had to admit it she wasn’t half bad, and was only about three years my junior. She’d never even consider looking at a pauper like myself. She wouldn’t be bothered should I die tomorrow. I was but a nobody to her. Never stood a chance in a million, and knowing that the ball was held for the reason of her picking a suitor, I was sure that many good looking, prestigious young men would be attending. I’d be merely a masked figure lost in the crowd. Mitch was right, we’d definitely be able to pull this one off. Though I’d never have admitted it to him , I was actually feeling rather excited.

Ready for the ball we made our way to the palace. I could tell this was going to be a good night. Everything was going according to plan. We looked dashing, if I say so myself, in matching black , tailed jacket suits, formal white shirts of the highest quality linen, and bowties of rich soft silk. Hiding behind the black and silver mask, for a moment, I felt empowered, rich and worthy of some enjoyment in life, briefly forgetting my lowly and troubled background.
“You okay, Leo?” Mitch interrupted my thoughts.
“Never better,” I lied
“This is your night. Don’t you forget it. Whatever you want. It’s yours.”
Maybe that was the solution, the mind set. I determined then and there to count myself worthy of everything that I would experience that night! I was worthy. Who had the right to say otherwise? All the power was vested in me.
“We’ve arrived,” the chauffeur announced.
“Thank You,” Mitch acknowledged , opening the door and launching himself out.
I took a deep breath before following him out of the carriage. I looked up, at the breath taking palace in front of me in absolute awe. It was unlike anything I’d ever beheld. The magnitude, the space, the manicured lawns. No wonder the royal family stayed so tightly wrapped up in their own little world. I mean, if I had all this, I’d never want to leave.
