Alice's POV
"I know," She breathed. I gaped at her in shock.
"What?" I whispered.
"I know," Riley repeated. She stared at the floor. My mouth was hung open.
"W-what do you mean, you know?" I asked in a suddenly raspy voice. She sighed and cleared her throat.
"I mean I know because, well..." She paused and took a breath in. "Whenever you're gone and I'm at mom's house, she does it to me too..." Riley said.
She got quieter with every word. I looked at her in utter disbelief. She looked at me as if it pained her to talk about it.
"Are you serious?" I asked. "Oh my goodness," I said as I sat down next to her and shook my head. I pulled her into a hug.
"This is unbelievable," I said to myself.
Once we both pulled away from each other we both just stared at the floor. Finally I spoke up.
"How long?" I whispered.
"About a year." She replied. I gaped at her once again.
"A year?" I yelled and stood up. "This has been going on for a year and you never told me?"
"You didn't tell me she was abusing you either!" Riley replied in a calm yet, loud voice. I shook my head.
"I thought I was protecting you," I sighed as I paced around her room. I stopped after a while and looked at her.
"Well, now that we both know, we can call the police." I said. This time, Riley stood up.
"No!" She said.
"What do you mean no?" I asked, once again baffled.
"I know she abuses us and stuff but-"
"Yeah, Riley! She abuses us and deserves to be put in jail!" I interrupted.
"How could we do this? She's our mother!" Riley yelled.
"You can't think of her like that, Riley." I sighed and pulled her into a hug. "Mothers love their children. Ours doesn't." I said bitterly.
Riley hugged me back and began to cry.
"I used to think she was the greatest mom ever," Riley said between gasps. "I don't know what happened to her." She said quietly.
"I know, I know," I said. "It'll be okay, Riley. We can't have her hurting us anymore. Can we please put an end to this?" I asked as I bent down to her level.
She nodded slowly and wiped a tear off her cheek.
"Okay, Riley. I have a plan." I said, still kneeling. "I'm gonna go back home, and let mom get close to hurting me again. When she does, I'm going to go into my room and call 911." I said. Riley nodded.
"I love you," I said and hugged her again. "I'll be back tomorrow or the next day. We will be okay, I promise."
After we stopped hugging, I headed out of her room and left her house after briefly saying goodbye to dad. I called Eva to tell her the news as I walked back home.
As I the conversation ended about 10 minutes later, I was at my doorstep. I stepped in quietly, and walked towards my room.
On the way there, I saw my mom drinking on the couch. I shivered as I stepped into my room. Tonight could be the night. I thought she didn't notice me since the tv was on, but I was wrong.
A couple minutes later after hiding my phone (but still keeping it within reach) she walked in.
"So, you're finally back." She slurred. "You've been gone all week! I didn't even know where you were, I was so worried." She gave a fake sad look but it quickly turned into a devilish smile. She laughed loudly at my confused look.
"Um, I'm sorry," I said quietly as I looked at the ground and slowly stepped away from her. She followed.
"What's that?" She asked. "I didn't quite hear you." She said with a smirk and grabbed my face and pulled me toward her, with a bottle of beer still in the other hand.
I slapped her hand off of my face and grabbed the phone. I tried to dial 911 as quickly as possible, but I was too late.
"Is that a phone?!" She yelled. "You're not allowed to have a phone and you know it. I guess now I have a reason to beat you." She spat and kicked me in the stomach.
I fell back and the phone flew out of my hand just as I pressed the call button. Maybe, just maybe, the call worked and I'll get help just in time. After she kicked me, she didn't pay attention to the phone. This could be the chance. I landed on the floor and she bent down to hit me.
"Hello, do you have an emergency?" I heard the phone faintly say.
"Help!!" I screamed as loud as possible.
My mom put her hand over my mouth. I quickly bit her hand and kicked her off of me. She fell backwards and I ran to the phone.
After grabbing it, I ran out into the living room. I explained the situation and said my address as quick as possible.
"Okay, help is on the way. Hang in there." The lady said. I then ran to hide in the shower as mom was getting up.
"Oh, now you've done it!" She yelled. I sat down in the shower as quietly as possible. "You can't hide from me." I think she was so drunk she forgot about the phone and police.
"You know, while you were gone, I thought up a few more ideas of how I could never get caught! Even if I killed you, I wouldn't get caught. I'd be as free as a bird," she said as she looked for me. I shivered and prayed that the police would come soon. Just then, she entered the bathroom.
"Alice.... Where are you?" She said and laughed.
I jumped back in fear as she jerked the shower curtain back.
"No, no...!" I said and tried to crawl away from her. She laughed loudly.
"You're pathetic." She said as she walked over the tub and climbed on top of me.
I tried my hardest to kick her and push her and punch her off of me. But I couldn't.
"Don't you dare try to hurt me!" She growled and grabbed my head. "One more kick and you're dead." She said, just as I tried kicking her off of me once more.
My eyes widened in fear as I realized what I did. She smirked and banged my head repeatedly against the edge of the tub.
"Stop..!" I gasped. Just as I heard the police walk into the front door, everything went black.________________
