Alice's POV
My eyes fluttered open as I took in my surroundings. Everything was dark. What time is it? It must be the middle of the night. But wait, where am I?
I slowly sat up in my bed when I felt a jarring pain course through my skull. I whimpered and let myself lay back down. Memories quickly flashed before my eyes. The last thing I remember happening was a man in uniform throwing a woman off of me after she repeatedly banged my head against something. Was that a dream?
No, it wasn't a dream. It was all coming back now. The plan with Riley, calling the police, hiding in the shower, her finding me and banging my head against the tub, the police walking in and....nothing. Everything went black after that. I looked around the room. Was I in the hospital? I must be, since I have all these wires around me. I must have been unconscious. For how long?
Just then, little whispers filled my head.
"Please don't leave me," I heard Riley say faintly. Except she wasn't here.
Did she say that to me while I was unconscious? I shook my head. It felt as if so many things were happening at once. I decided to press a button next to me that would notify a doctor or nurse, I'm guessing. Hopefully I could get some answers that way.
A minute or two later, a woman walked in, who I'm guessing is the nurse. She turned the light on and stared at me in shock.
"Um, am I in the hospital? Could you tell me what happened to me?" I asked groggily.
She just gasped and ran out the door. I groaned. Before I almost pressed the button once again, the same woman walked in with a tall middle-aged man. The doctor? He also stared at me with wide eyes.
"Um, could you tell me what is going on, please?" I asked in a frustrated tone.
"I'm sure as you can tell, we are very surprised that you are awake. It's sort of a miracle that you are actually." He stated after clearing his throat.
"Oh," I said, "How long have I been here? How did I get here?" I asked.
"Well, an ambulance brought you in at about 5pm 2 days ago. You got here unconscious from getting your head repeatedly banged against something. You almost died on the way here from blood loss." He said. I nodded. I didn't know what I was supposed to say.
"Does my family know? What about my friends, Justin and Eva?" I asked.
"You're father and sister came in yesterday. Your mother was sentenced to jail. Was one of your friends named Justin Crowder?" He asked. I nodded.
"Well, unfortunately," the doctor paused and cleared his throat, "Justin got into a car accident yesterday at around noon," my eyes widened in disbelief.
"Is he okay?!" I almost shrieked.
"He is unconscious at the moment and has a broken rib. However, he should be alright." I sighed in relief.
"I have to go see him. What room?" I said as I began to sit up again.
"Oh, no, no. You have to stay in this bed until we are completely certain that you are recovered, and that could be a while." He spoke and gently pushed me back onto the bed. I frowned.
"Can you at least tell me what room he's in?" I asked.
"He's in the room right next to yours, actually. Room 105" the doctor said. I smiled.
"Nurse, get Alice some food and medicine, please," I heard the doctor mutter. Just then I realized how hungry I was. I was thankful he called for food.
"What time is it?" I asked quietly, trying to push all my thoughts aside.'Justin will be okay," I told myself over and over.
"It's about 5 am." He said as he got up and retrieved what the nurse had very quickly brought back. He set down a tray over me that held bacon, pancakes, and eggs. On the side of the food was a tiny pill.
"Take the pill once you are finished eating. Here's the remote for the television if you get bored." I nodded as the doctor left the room.
I decided it wouldn't hurt if I watched some tv. So I did. I turned on SpongeBob SquarePants and quickly stuffed my face with the food in front of me. Surprisingly, it was very delicious. After eating I took the pill with some water.
For a second I was actually very content and happy. Justin is going to be okay, I'm going to be okay, I'm finally free from my mother, everything is good.
At least I thought so until I heard violent beeps and nurses and doctors rushing around into the room next to mine. Didn't the doctor say Justin's room was right next to mine? Was that the room these people were rushing to?
I began to panic as I listened for any sounds that could tell me what was going on. I couldn't really hear anything besides frantic murmuring from the doctors and faint beeps from the machines. Just then, I heard a loud, drawn out beep._________________________
