“Who are you supposed to be?” I asked Emma who was standing by the refreshments. I had just made it to the party and was searching for Todd. “I’m Marilyn Monroe. You look amazing!” I couldn’t decide what to be so I came as Pocahontas. I had on a tight brown dress, a head band with feathers, some leather boots, and of course some makeup to make me look the part. My hair was down straight and I had little clips in it. “Thank you!” I smiled and grabbed some juice. I was looking for Todd everywhere. Where could he be? I came outside by the pool area. There are lanterns hanging and a DJ. This place is awesome. When I lost all hope someone tapped me. “Excuse me Indian princess, I am look for this girl Rachel.” It was Todd! I couldn’t stop laughing.

“I was starting to think you weren’t coming.” He gulped down a sip of his Sprite.

“I should say the same.” I admired his costume. “So what are you?”

“Batman. In disguise as a regular person.”

“That was my first guess.” I said jokingly.

“Ha ha! Yeah I’m not really a costume person.”

Just as things were going good a girl dressed as wonder woman comes over. “Hey. Who’s your friend?” She sounded cheerful. “Um Rachel, Mary. Mary this is my friend, Rachel.” She hugged me and continued to stand by Todd. “I’ll be right back.” She glanced at me smiling and then Todd. Then she… she…kissed Todd. My. Heart. Is. Shattered! When she walked away I didn’t know what to say. “So…That’s your girlfriend?” I could not look in his eye. “Yeah.” He was looking around too. “How long have you guys been together?” I didn’t want to be all in the business but, I have to know. “Just a couple of weeks. She goes to a different school though.” I just nodded like I understood. “Well. I’ll talk to you later.” I couldn’t bare it. The tears started to whelm in my eyes. The tears started to blur my vision.

            “Hey Rachel!”

            “Oh, hey Drew.”

            “What’s wrong?”

My tears rolled down the side of my chicks. Drew wiped them away. “What happened?” I wanted to just run out of this party, but Drew was holding my shoulders. “I don’t want to talk about it. I’ll see you Monday.” I left with nothing to say. When I got home it was no better. I had to run straight to my room so my mom and her friends would not be able to see me crying.

The rest of the weekend I stayed in. Monday I didn’t talk at all until lunch. Tuesday was no better, but Wednesday I had to fess up with what was wrong with me. “Alright! We have to talk. What’s wrong Rae?” Drew dragged me to the table to sit down. “It’s nothing. Just tired.” I pushed my hair behind my ear. “Come on. It’s me. Tell me.” He stared at me with his awesome eyes I just couldn’t say no staring into them. “Fine.” He leaned in to listen.

“At the Halloween party I saw Todd…” I paused.

“Obviously you would.”

“With his girlfriend.”

Drew was quiet.

“I got all the wrong signals. Turns out they have been going out for a while now. I feel like a fool.”

“Don’t. It happens, just brush it off. There is so much better out there. Who cares? His loss, you’re awesome! And you were the best Pocahontas I have ever seen.” He nudged my arm.

“Thanks.” I grinned, feeling a little better but really it still hurts.

Maybe I’m not good enough for him. Not pretty or smart enough. Maybe he likes happy go preppy girls. Or just all together not me.
