Though mum tried her best Petunia refused to change her decision, Lily and I were ruled out as bridesmaids. Not that we minded as much once we saw the bridesmaid's dresses, great big, mismatched monstrosities that they were. And besides, we were both far too excited about the Potter's Christmas party to even give Tuney the time of day. Mum and dad had felt bad about us being thrown out of the wedding plans, so they bought us each a new dress and Lily was even wearing heels.

The two of us were getting ready in Lily's bedroom as it was bigger than mine and as I added lipstick to my lips I caught Lily twirling in her velvet green dress out of the corner of my eye.

'If you do that at the party then everyone's going to catch a glimpse of your knickers. Nice colour choice.' I snickered.

Lily huffed and through a cushion at me from her chair, I ducked, and it smacked off the mirror before falling to the ground.

'It is a bit shorter than I'm used to.' she grumbled.

'No, it's not. The shoes just make your legs look longer giving the illusion of a short dress. You look perfect Lily, don't worry.'

Lily gave me a sweet smile as she plucked a burgundy lipstick from my makeup bag and swiped it over her lips. I gave her my place at the vanity table as I ventured to the full-length mirror, I grabbed the pillow from the floor and threw it onto the bed before admiring myself. Originally I hadn't really been sure about the dress, bows weren't normally my thing but once I had tried it on I had fallen in love with it, besides, I really love red.

'Ready?' Lily asked from behind me.

I did a quick twirl before nodding and following my sister out of the room, switching off the light behind me as I went. I was stopped short when Lily suddenly stopped.

'Wait, I almost forgot.'

She pointed her wand at my face and told me to stay still.

'Ultima noctis.'

My face felt as if someone had spritzed a little bit of water over it and I blinked as I watched Lily cast the spell on her own face.

'It's a spell to set your makeup so it doesn't come off. Geneva taught it to me.'

Lily and I finally made our way downstairs to find mom with a camera, it took twenty minutes, about a hundred pictures and dad bribing mum with a fancy meal for us to escape. Once in the safety of the back garden I held onto Lily's arm and she Apparated us to an empty alleyway near The Leaky Cauldron, we entered only to be greeted by stares and wolf whistles, it's not as if they were prone to well-dressed visitors, people usually just passed through. Which is exactly what we did, we rushed through the pub leaving only the clacking of our heels and the smell of our perfumes behind. Lily tapped the bricks and the wall opened for us revealing Diagon Alley in all its nocturnal glory, it wasn't as crowded as during the day but there were still quite a few people milling about, picking up last minute books, supplies and whatnot for the holidays.

'Lily, Violet!'

I glanced in the direction of whoever had called us to see Remus and Peter scurrying towards us with smiles on their faces.

'You two look lovely.' Remus commented upon reaching us.

'Thanks, the two of you don't look too bad yourselves.' Lily responded.

'We'd better get going, Mr. and Mrs. Potter are waiting.' Peter warned.

The four of us joined hands and Remus Apparated us to the Potter house, I pushed away the nauseous feeling that I had developed from Apparating twice in ten minutes, so I could admire James' home. I said it was a house, but it was more of a manor than anything, the trees were lit up by floating balls of something that looked like sunlight and I could hear the music and laughter from inside.
