Carter's POV

She's in surgery still. Oh my god, that said that- her leg was severely damaged. A lot of the nerves were severed, and- and

And they might have to amputate it- well, not her whole leg, just below the knee.

She would probably not be able to ride ever again. Oh, that would kill her.

Even if they can save the leg, they told us it would be damaged, maybe even permanently. She'd have a slight limp when she walks. But maybe the damage isn't as bad as they think.

They didn't really get a good look at it before they wheeled her into surgery.

A doctor comes from the operating room. She has her black hair tied back in a pony tail, and a grim look on her face.

"I'm afraid we have some bad news," she says solemnly. My heart stops beating, and a lump rises in my throat.

Riley (Veterinary Technician) POV

This horse is fading fast. His legs are severely cut, and he's losing blood by the second.

We have him sedated, and are cleaning his wounds with alcohol so we can surgically remove all the debri, and then stitch him up.

"Do you think we can save him," I ask my supervisor, Fay. She's a headstrong horsewoman herself, and I can see that it's killing her to see a beautiful, strong stallion like this.

"I don't know... but we have to try. I just got a call from the family who owns her. His owner, the girl, is in emergency surgery right now. I don't want her to come out of that and lose her horse," Fay mutters, determinedly cleaning the wound.

"I need a blood transfusion," she gruffly orders.

I really hope that we can save this horse. He really is a beautiful boy. He reminds me of my old horse.

But as every second ticks away, that seems less likely. I think that we're going to lose him.

"Get me a crash cart, he's coding," Fay snaps. I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't notice his heartbeat has flatlined.
