Rolling to his feet, Hiccup rushed over to the sleeping forms of Merida and Jack. He couldn't see Toothless. He noticed small black grains of sand below their eyelids. He brushed them off, and Merida and Jack both gasped, and opened their eyes.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here?" Pitch asked.
"A Spirit," said Hiccup. "With two other Spirit friends!"
"Sarcasm does not become you, young Viking."
"Hiccup, what are you doing?" Jack hissed. Hiccup held up a hand.
"Sorry to burst your bubble, Pitch, but I'm not a young Viking anymore. Not really sure if I'm even a Viking after all of this... Oh, well."
"Did you have a good rest?" asked Pitch.
"Not really," Hiccup said. "Y'know, nightmares, watching people die, the usual. I wonder, where is the Mara?"
Hiccup was hopefully distracting Pitch from the stone slab where Rapunzel was, as he inched closer and closer.
"I disposed of her. She served her purpose. Oh, and Mr. Haddock? I can see everything in this room. It is, after all, covered in shadow." Hiccup froze. "But," Pitch continued, "if you're so set on stopping me, then, by all means, converse with your friends. I promise that I won't listen."
"What are yer promises worth?" Merida shouted.
"Quite a lot, if you would listen for two seconds."
Hiccup raised an eyebrow. I have a bad feeling about this, he thought.
"Sorry," said Jack, "forgive is if we don't believe you."
"As you wish," Pitch said, soundimg pleased. He roared, and the ground on which they all were standing shifted, and rose. Hiccup could see that the chains on the stone slab continued doen fsrther into the shadows.
The floor moved higher and higher, and Hiccup's stomach dropped.
"No," he whispered. "No, it died!"
"Pitch, tell us what's going on!" shouted Merida.
"Oh, don't you know?" Pitch asked, his oily voice taking on a sickly sweet tone. "This is the Red Death. Inappropriately named, seeing as it's grey, but I'm not one to argue."
The Red Death roared, making me tremble on it's back. Merida found her way over to where I was, clutching my arm for balance.
