Over the next couple of days we just kept walking, the sleeping, then getting up and walking some more. It wasn’t until the fourth day something happened. We were hiking through the woods, still close by the road but far enough in only we could see out but any passers couldn’t see in. We were in a nice silence until an arrow whizzed by my face. It stuck into the tree in front of us, and my mouth dropped. “What the hell!?” I exclaimed.

All of us ran up to it, and Drake was turning his head this way and that to see where the person was. I walked up to the tree and pulled the arrow out, there was a not on it and so I carefully took it off trying not to rip it.

Dear Renee,

Don’t worry I’m not trying to kill you (I have other people for that, well things)but I can make it all go away with the snap of my fingers. I want you to go to the next town, and make it there by 7p.m. I can then make an offer to you, one I hope you will take up. Also? Don’t bring your little ‘friends’. They can be in the town, just not where you’re going. Meet me in the old theatre. And, don’t bother trying to find me RIGHT now, because I got someone else to do it, I probably would have killed you if I tried to use an arrow.

There was no name to tell me who it was; just what I suspected was the first letter of his name. I read the note aloud to the rest, leaving out the part about him wanting to meet me and where. If I could end this, I would. “Do you think, we could stop at the next town?”

Drake looked unsure, “I don’t know Renee, it seems dangerous-“

“Please? My back hurts,” I lied.

“Maybe it would to us some good to sleep on a bed, we’ll get a hotel but I will break a window to get out if I have to.” He said. Ellie looked at me suspiciously but I just looked right back shrugging my shoulders.

“Ok…” Ellie reluctantly agreed. Lexi didn’t have much of a say because she was who knows where. Over the course of the rest of the day, not much happened. At 12, we rested for an hour, ate and then got on our feet once more. By 3 o’clock Drake could tell that the town was near, and by 4 we were there.

“Alright, so do you see any hotel?” Drake asked. I looked around.

“Over there.” I said pointing towards a 3 story building that had the word ‘Inn’ on it. We walked to it and then he checked us in.

“Are we sure that they’re…normal?” Ellie asked.

“I’m sure that they are, Ellie. Nothing to worry about.” The lady made polite conversation, which I knew made her normal, because Aevids couldn’t exactly speak. She handed Drake the key card and we got to our room number 15. It was on the first floor to make an easy escape if needed. When the door opened, it was a nice little room. Two beds, Drake offered to sleep on the floor while we got the bed. Ellie and I nodded furiously, not wanting the stiff floor because the outdoors was bad enough.

Ellie and Drake decided to sleep, and so I faked it. At 6:30 they were still out of it, and I slowly got up, trying not to rustle the sheets. “Where are you going?” Lexi whispered when I was in the hall.

“Oh my god!” I whisper yelled, “And none of your business.” I answered.

“Tell me now.” Lexi said firmly.

“No way!” I paused, “Wait…this whole time, are you just invisible?”

“Yes, why?”

“Then you can come with me. But nevershow yourself, understand?”

“Yes, I understand,” she replied and disappeared.

I finally found the old theatre but Lexi couldn’t get through the door like I could, “I’m sorry but…there’s some sort of invisible force field.” I nodded and kept walking. I walked through the empty rows of chairs.

“Renee,” a voice said.
