Mary stood at the entrance of the ball room afraid to go inside, not because what she was wearing for the occasion wasn't good enough, she had woren a silver tube dress, which had green fake diamonds stoned to it and a slit running up by the right side. It had been a gift from a designer friend of hers, in Mary's definition it was too revealing. But Pablo had said she looked like Aphrodite. It hugged her body too much, she had been scared it wouldn't fit. And there's literally no one else except Pablo.
She watched as a blond haired girl in a royal blue gown passed her, pushing Mary aside as she did so. Mary sighed, this is exactly why she hated such events. They were mostly attended by people who were too full of themselves.
She made her way to the entrance, handing her invitation to security to see. As Mary got in, she was pleased at her beautifully decorated the place was, it reminded her of a Victorian style ball room. As a teenager she had read romances and dreamed she had been born in that era, she quickly pushed the thought away as she spotted the hostess.
The woman had her back turned towards Mary so she didn't see her approaching. She seemed to be in deep conversation with one of the waiters Mary noticed as she got closer.
"Good evening mother" Mary greeted.
Mrs Cruz turned to her daughter with a big smile on plastered on her face. " my baby" she said as she pulled the young woman into a hug. "I missed you" she pulled away and stared at her daughter.
Mary stood there staring at an older, prettier and wiser version of herself. Her mom had only gotten prettier with age.
"You didn't have to invite me, you know how much I hate such events" Mary said.
"And yet see how lovely you showed up. I almost didn't recognize you" Mrs Cruz said looking her up and down. "I miss you. And if I had requested for you to come out you would have given an excuse about being busy"
Mary rolled her eyes at her mother's statement as the older woman took her hand in her hands. "I am sorry maa"
"You should be" Mary turned to look at her father".
"Hello Dad" she greeted
"My baby" he said as he gathered her in his hand into a warm hug. Mary couldn't deny it, she missed her parents. She pulled away from him, he hadn't aged a day she observed as she looked him up and down. He still looked the same from when she was a child.
"What's your secret Pa?" Sha asked.
He laughed at her and rolled his eyes at his wife. "You hear that mirabelle. Our daughter still thinks I'm good looking"
"Stop deceiving yourself Derrick. She didn't see you when I met you, your old." She replied with a smile at the corner of her lips. She turned her attention to her daughter. She looked thin but beautiful. No one understood why Mary had chosen to leave home and stay away, but for whatever reason she hoped her daughter would come back soon.
"Don't you worry about your brothers Mary" her mom asked
Mary paused, hoping she'd feel something close to worries for her brothers, but there was nothing just anger.
"No, I don't. They are big boys, they don't need me worrying over them" she said as she shrugged.
Mrs Cruz quickly turned away with hurt in her eyes, to look at her husband. He pretended to be going through his phone, but she knew he had heard and was equally affected.
"Darling we have to go now" mirabelle Cruz said to her daughter as she turned to hug her, placing a kiss on both sides of her cheek
"Yeah, your mother wants us to welcome all the guest and make them feel at home" her dad added as he also hugged her. "Come home soon sweetheart" he whispered into her ears
"Mingle my love, we don't want to waste such a pretty dress" her mom said as she pulled her dad away.
Mary stood there, lost in thought. She was definitely going to mingle, she had to find a man to marry but going back home she wasn't so sure about that. Not until she was married and settled down.
"Excuse me" someone said from behind. Mary turned to see a tall blond with deep brown eyes, she couldn't help but admire him as a smile formed on her face. "Would you like to dance" he asked.
She nodded in response too excited to reply as he took her outstretched hand and led her to the dance floor.
Maybe today she will actually go home with a guy, she thought as he swirled her on the dance floor.
