"So, Derek is your best friend?" Abby asked me at work, setting a folded shirt on the table next to her.

"Yeah, we're BFFs. He's a great a guy." Abby didn't answer, just folded another shirt, and I smiled discreetly, skipping over to Derek, who was finishing up showing a guy some sizes of pants. "Why do you ask?"

Abby looked at me, a surprised expression on her flushed face. "Oh, um, no reason. He just...seems like a nice guy."

"He is, you should go talk to him."

"Oh no, he'd find it weird I'm sure-"

"He probably won't, I think you're worrying too much."

Just when I thought Abby was going to chicken out and scurry off, Derek bounded up to me with an excited look on his face.

"Dude, Kristen, I just had a customer buy six pairs of pants from me!" I laughed at his enthusiasm, and I heard Abby chuckle as well.

"Nice one Derek, I think you can be qualified for employee of the month now," I teased, and he rolled his eyes at me.

"Abby you're impressed right? Six pairs of pants? That's like, three hundred dollars!" Abby giggled, and I chose this time to walk away slowly and go back to the storage room to text Carter on his break.

Pretty sure Derek and Abby have the hots for each other :)) miss you, hope working with the kiddos is going well

I added a couple heart emojis and hit send, sneaking off into the break room to eat the Cheez Its I had in my lunch box. As I sat down, my phone vibrated with an incoming call from Carter himself.

"Hey! How's work going?" I asked, chewing on a Cheez It.

"It's going good, I helped a kid all by myself today without the help of the nurse, I felt extremely legit, just call me Doctor Morrison." I chuckled, popping another Cheez It in my mouth.

"I'm not into role play Carter," I responded, and he laughed on the other line.

"How's your day going? I miss you, I feel like I never see you anymore."

I giggled. "Carter, I see you every day after work."

"I know, I just feel like our jobs suck up the time we used to have together, can I make dinner for you tonight? Come over to my house tonight?"

I paused in my chewing, smiling around my crackers. "I would love that," I responded, crumpling up my trash and tossing it in the trash across the small break room. It missed.

"Awesome, come by around six okay? I have to get back to work, a fourth grader is about to come in to take her daily meds, but I'll see you tonight."

"Okay, have fun playing nurse! Love you, I'll see you later."

With the dinner date in the back of my head, work went well for the rest of my shift, and I was excited to be clocking out and heading out to the car, Derek following behind me.

"So when is it acceptable to ask Abby out?" He asked me as soon as he got into the drivers seat.

I laughed, turning the radio on. "Whenever you want. If you just ask her to get coffee or something, that'll be civil and casual enough, I'm sure she'd be down." Derek nodded, seemingly deep in thought. "Oh, and can you drop me off at Carter's?"

Derek waggled his eyebrows at me. "And why is that?"

"Stop, he's making me dinner. Why do you always have to do that thing with your eyebrows whenever I mention being alone with Carter? We've been together for over a year, we're not children." Derek snickered to himself, and I was thankful that he was pulling into Carter's driveway, so I could save myself from embarrassment.
