I was relaxing on the beach, I hadn’t upset myself about my parents for almost 9 months, and I visited their grave every fortnight with a fresh bunch of flowers.
I lent up on my elbows and watched my brother play volley ball with some friends from school. There was Adam, Daniel, Alex, Tom, Amy, Emma, Kelly and Jenny. It was boys versus girls and the boys were leading by 20 points. The girls were getting slaughtered.
“Suze,” Amy called from the volley ball game. “We could use some help,” she said smiling.
“Sure,” I called back. I got up and strode over to the net.
“Suze, are you playing?” Tom – Andy’s best friend – said laughing.
“Yes I am, Tom,” I answered. “Why?”
“Well the last time you played, we had to make up a new number for below zero,” he answered, hi-fiving his friends.
“Ha ha very funny,” I said sarcastically. “We’re starting,” I announced and grabbed the ball out of his hands.
“If that’ll make a difference,” Tom said smiling.
I got in position and hit the ball over the net so fast that the boys had no time to react to it.
They dropped it and stared at me like they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Adam hit the ball over the net. Jenny jumped into the air and hit it back. Andy volleyed it back to the girl’s side. I jumped and lunged to hit the ball over the other side. I slammed it onto the sand onto the other side of the net before the boys knew what had happened! We carried on like this for half-an-hour until the boys finally admit defeat when the score came to 73-22 to the girls.
I was laughing by the end of the game and the girls hardly put any effort into volleying the balls to the boy’s side. I walked back to where my things were lying and quickly packed everything into my beach bag. I put my sunglasses on and waited for Andy to join me. I loved my older brother. He was the only family I had in the world and I never wanted him to be stolen from me like my parents had been.
Andy gathered his things and they both walked to Andy’s Porsche G18. We loaded things in the back and jumped in the car. Andy turned the radio on full blast while I lowered the roof so that the sun was shining down on us.
“So, where to Suze?” Andy asked as he passed our high school.
“The library,” I replied. “I have a report I have to do and I have to use at least 3 different sources for the information, so I thought the library would be the best place to start.”
Andy nodded and turned at September Avenue. In a few minutes we had arrived at Newport Library. It was a large building that was having some changes made to it. More computers were being installed and the whole place was being re-decorated.
I went to the History section and started searching for books while Andy logged onto a computer and starting surfing the net.
I found books on Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Chinese and Japanese myths and legends. Just when I thought I had enough a large book fell from the top shelf. I jumped and dropped all the books in my hands. I sighed and collected all the books on from the floor. I took them all to a deserted table and started checking through them and making notes in my notebook.
