I should’ve been scared.

I should’ve felt fear, freezing me in place and restricted me from moving. Fear should’ve filled every part of my mind, preventing me to think clearly, from making decisions.

But instead, I felt the opposite.

My mind opened up, my senses working double time. The feeling of subtle electricity of Fateus in the air grew more defined. My body prepared itself before I even knew there was any danger.

“W-who are you?” Tamora asked.

“Me?” the man said in his raspy voice, sending chills down my spine, “I have no name. I can only be identified by the fear I bring, the pain I inflict, and the hope I take away.” My four teammates caught their breaths.

“No,” Afetil said in a whisper,

“Y-You can’t be him,” Royage said in a voice that was almost…fear.

“So, you have heard of me,” the man said. You could almost hear the smirk when he spoke.

“Why are you here?” I asked, trying to sound braver than I felt.

“To intercept you, of course.” He said, smiling evilly.

“Who sent you? Vudel?”

“I’m afraid I’m not at liberty to tell, but yes, I suppose you could say that.” He said, obviously not caring what he was ordered to do except to kill, ”but you won’t live long enough to find out.”

Then suddenly, the back of his cloak ripped open. There was no clue to what caused the rip except a hint of something pointed protruding from his back. Then altogether, he slid his cloak down, dropping to the floor.

My eyes scanned the horrifying sight in front of us. He had a humanoid form, thank goodness. Somehow, that lessened my fear. But his skin. Oh what a disgusting sight to behold. Something icky green leaked from his skin, making his whole body gleam under the moon’s light.

His whole bod seemed to be melted. He looked like an action figure thrown into the fire place. The features of his face were now the remaining blob of what used to be a head. His teeth looked like a shark’s, small but enough to make you back away from his mouth.

Claws extended from his hands, as if he cut the claws of a bird and proclaimed them as his own. His eyes were a deep black, cold as the depths of an empty well.

I looked into those midnight-black eyes and it was as if my whole body shut down. I didn’t see anything but those eyes, feel anything or hear anything. I didn’t hear my friend’s; I didn’t feel the chill that the evening wind brought.

This time, I froze in fear at the sight that those eyes showed. Deaths. Deaths of the people I knew. Mom, Dad, Afetil, Donnest, Kinow, Sinle. Everyone. I saw how he ripped their bodies to pieces, how his claws shredded the remains. I didn’t know he attacked until Donnest pulled me out of the line of fire.

I stared at the spikes oozing with green poison planted on the ground where I used to be just two seconds ago. I mumbled thanks to Donnest and paid more attention to our enemy.

“Don’t look into his eyes too long,” Afetil said to everyone, ”or he’ll show you what makes you frozen in fear and despair.” Well, I knew that now.
