“Hayley, I need to tell you something,” I paused for a moment. My palms were sweating, heart pounding from nervousness. I planned this for days now, even studying in advance so I can prepare myself for what can either be the happiest or the most miserable day of my life.
She looked up at me expectantly with her eyebrows slightly raised. My throat felt dry. I opened my mouth to say what I needed to say, but nothing came out. I cleared my throat and tried again, “Hayley…” I stammered, “For weeks now I’ve been completely smitten by you. Your hair, your eyes, your smile, they keep me breathless. I’ve been mustering up the courage to ask you this, so…”
I looked up at her again. Surprisingly, she was blushing and had a big smile on her face. I took a deep breath before finishing the thought, “So I was just wondering if you would go out with me tomorrow night.” I managed to say those words without collapsing. The few seconds that took for her to gather her thoughts seemed like minutes.
I looked at her and she didn’t seem to know what to say, she tried to speak but her voice faltered, so she cleared her throat and tried again “Um, that’s sweet, Zander, but… I’m already seeing Ian.” The words hit me with an impact of a tidal wave. Ian Chase. Of course she'd go out with him. He was the most popular guy in school, chased after by all the girls at school. Ian Chase, always chased, all the guys would say. Nothing less for the very beautiful Hayley Baker.
”He asked me out a couple of days ago and after a few more dates, he asked me to be his girlfriend, and…”
“And…” I echoed, bracing myself for what I knew was coming.
“And I said yes” the courage I mustered up was gone and I felt like I was in a dark room all by myself.
“Zander?” she asked when I was unable to speak for a few seconds.
“Oh, uh, cool,” I stuttered. “Congratulations, you two,” She flashed me that cute crooked smile that I’ve been daydreaming about for weeks, but only now it was sympathetic. A strand of her hair that was dyed goldish brown slid to her face and she casually tucked it behind her ear.
“Let’s go Hayley, we need to go to class,” Darlene, her best friend, said as she was fussing with the books she was carrying.
“Okay,” Hayley replied in that sweet, sweet voice I‘ve always admired. “Zander, listen, I need to go, so I hope you’ll have a great night anyway,” she said, once again flashing that dazzling smile of hers.
“Yeah, I will. Bye,” I said in an effort to sound sure. Darlene closed her locker and walked with Hayley towards their next class.
I stood there in disappointment. For days I’ve been working up the courage to ask Hayley Baker and it ends up me being the loser that got dumped. Great, just when I finally decided to ask out a girl I like.
I walked to my next class looking like a child that just found out that Santa Clause doesn’t exist. The usual noise of conversations, the banging of locker doors, and sound of feet on pavement echoed throughout the hallways. Kids opening their lockers lined the walls and students hurrying to their classes before the bell rings.
