THE NEXT DAY, I found myself pacing back and forth in my hospital room, which wasn't easy on crutches.
Okay, Scarlett. You can do this.
"It's just therapy," I told myself. "What's the worst that can happen?"
Sure, go around talking to yourself. That'll convince them you're not crazy.
I rolled my eyes at the voice in my head.
I balanced my crutches under one arm and threw open the door. Dr. Michaels had given me the room number of the councillor I was scheduled to talk to, so I hobbled down the hall, avoiding eye contact with every person I paced.
I got into the elevator and closed my eyes. The box sailed upwards and my stomach dropped. I could feel my chest begin to tighten as the elevator door whooshed open, revealing the sixth floor lounge. I followed the signs to room 613, and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" A cold voice called from inside.
I sighed and did my best to prop open the door. She must have seen me struggling, because the door was suddenly opening on its own.
The woman holding the door motioned for me to sit on the couch. She poured two glasses of water, placed them on the coffee table, and sat on the opposite end of the couch.
I looked her over. She was tall and lean, with dark skin and long black cornrowed hair. She wore a dark blue blazer over a dress, with a geometric pattern in blues, black, and white. Her face was unreadable.
"Good afternoon, Scarlett. I'm Dr. Lewis, the councillor here at the hospital." Her voice was cold and clinical.
I kept my tone neutral. "Hello, Dr. Lewis."
She looked me over, a knowing look in her eyes. "You do know why your here, right Scarlett?"
I couldn't help the sadistic laugh that erupted from lips. "Because I was kidnapped and held captive by a stranger for ten years and I'm not a catatonic mess?"
Apparently, the good doctor did not appreciate my humour. "You know that's not it."
I waved a hand at her, motioning for her to continue. "Then explain it to me please. I'm adjusting. I just want to be a normal teenager."
