As soon as we stepped onto the porch a loud voice yelled "VIC IS HERE!" I flinched and recoiled away from the door, losing my hold on Vic. The only time people ever yell around me is if I'm about to get in trouble or, in my mother's case sometimes, about to get hit. She was very careful to only leave bruises where no one would find them. I wrung my hands nervously, and Vic wrapped his arm around my waist, kissing my forehead.
"Hey, it's okay. It's just Jaime." Vic said. His face showed concern and curiosity. Perfect. I'm not gonna be able to lie about this when he asks about it. He looked like he wanted to say something more, but as he opened his mouth the door opened, revealing a balding older man smiling with a beer in his hand. His smile only widened when he saw Vic's arm around me. He came forward and pulled both of us in for a giant hug.
"Papá, papá! Can't breathe!" Vic yelled, giggling. His father let us go and turned to go in.
"Welcome, son, to El restaurante de Fuentes! Where we serve only the best tacos, fresh and homemade!" I laughed. "Vic, will you please get Mike out of his room? All four of us have tried and he won't come out. Dinner's ready in 10 minutes. He's been in there for hours."
Vic sighed. "Yeah, yeah. I'll make him come out. I'm gonna show Kellin upstairs, he's a little overwhelmed right now. Call us when dinner is ready?" His father said yes and Vic dragged me upstairs to his room, which contained next to nothing. A bed, desk, and bookshelf was all it contained.
"You're room is so clean!" I gasped. He laughed.
"Well, enjoy it while it lasts. My parents made me clean it for today. Actually, all of my stuff is in that closet over there." I tsked at him, and he just shrugged. "Okay, take a minute and rest before you meet my family. Just a warning, they will be loud." He looked knowingly at me. "I'm gonna go get my brother, and then I need to ask you something. Stay here." He walked out of the room before I could respond.
Shit. I knew exactly what he wanted to ask.

I assumed Mike's room was right next to Vic's, because I could hear pounding on his door and Vic yelling at him. After a few minutes, I heard the door open and Vic shutting it behind him. Honestly, hearing Vic yell like that absolutely terrified me. I was actually shaking. I curled up into a ball on Vic's bed, trying to take deep breaths and calm down before I had a panic attack. That would be a good first impression to make on my future family. Tears fought to come out, but I kept them back.
Soon enough, Mike's door reopened and I heard angry steps going down the stairs and Vic yelling "I'll be down in ten minutes!"
I tried to compose myself, but failed to before Vic walked in and saw me. He immediately rushed over to me, resulting in me scooting back on his bed so far I fell off the other side, hitting my head on the wall.
"Kellin! Are you okay?" He asked frantically, running to the other side of the bed.
"D-Don't t-t-touch me." I stuttered. He looked confused for a second, and the realized what I must have heard.
"Kellin, I didn't mean to scare you. Sometimes with Mike though you have to raise your voice for him to hear you. I'm not going to hurt you. Can I come closer?" I nodded hesitantly and he sat down next to me.
"Your head's okay, right?"
"Yes." We were silent for a minute.
"Kellin, why do you get so scared by yelling?" There it was. I knew I couldn't lie to him. The tears I had been holding back were now streaming down my face. Vic forgot to not touch me and pulled me into one of the most intimate hugs I've ever been in.
"Sh, sh. Babe, you're okay. You can tell me what's going on. No matter what it is." Damn it. Fucking immediate trust.
"My m-mom. She only yells when she's a-about to h-h-hit me. She told me she hates me and I'm her biggest mistake and failure. She kicked me out of the house today. I don't have anywhere to go." Words flooded out of my mouth before I could even process them. Vic's grip on me tightened with every word I said. If anyone else would have tried to touch me at that moment I probably would have ran away from them and done anything I could to stay away from them. But with Vic, it was different. The scientist who discovered the soul mates system was right. Even if I hadn't known Vic for more than an hour or two, I felt an unbreakable bond between us.
