Chapter 3 - Aevirun
It was slightly chilly in the air, but one could feel the freshness in the air too. Spring was coming, but winter was determined to hold on to its control over the weather, and there would be spouts of warm weather, and then sudden cold spells determined to quash any spring flower that had dared venture out too early.
Living in the Vumekaya Monastery helped with getting used to the weather. The weather for her and Felix was warm enough now to where they could go around without wearing large heavy cloaks, but she figured that people living at lower and thus generally warmer temperatures would have a more difficult time with getting adjusted to colder temperatures.
Khoeli's eyes grew huge as they approached the town. The ground beneath their feet changed from soft earth into rough cobblestone, and she started to hear unfamiliar noises. Digging into her memory, she remembered that horses made some of those noises.
She'd never seen a horse before though.
How did she know that sound was what horses made?
Perplexed, she hadn't noticed they were about to enter the wide open field now. The trees that had been giving them cover stopped at a certain point, and they were at the edges of a field. The sight was enough to make her stop again, and gaze out in complete awe.
Felix noticed her stopping, in plain view, and hissed at her, alarmed at the clothes they were wearing. "Kho! Your cloak! They mustn't see your clothing."
She stumbled, confused, before remembering. She ducked behind a tree and recalled that the cloak was in her satchel. Slinging it back around her shoulder, she dug through the pack and found it. Drawing it around her shoulders, she threw the hood over her head and fastened the clasps securely. Her brown and nondescript clothing was now hidden by the lengthy blue cloak.
"We're going to have to split up. They won't mind me since Brothers do come here fairly often, but you.. need to remain away from me. It's well known around these parts that Brothers don't associate with females."
She frowned. "Isn't that somewhat sexist? What's wrong with being a female?"
He grimaced. "It's part of the whole being a Brother thing, I suppose. Something about temptations? I didn't really pay attention, though."
She looked at him. "You were in training. Did that mean you would have stopped being my friend once you'd finished your training?"
"I-" he couldn't answer her.
An uncomfortable pause. "Do you still want me to order clothes?"
"It'd be well advised. The last thing we'd want is to have those people-" he slipped. "I mean, if anything ends up following us, we don't want people remembering us, right? Brothers might be welcome here, but they don't come here often."
Those people?
It rested uneasily on her that he was hiding something from her.
"Plus, you mentioned earlier that you'd heard a whistle and this beast left, just like that. I'm still not completely convinced it actually existed, but you haven't stopped arguing about it's existence since that incident happened."
Felix slipped off suddenly. She only saw the tall grass bend where he'd been a second ago.
"Felix?" She questioned, looking around, to no avail.
Hissing came from somewhere down in the grass, and a mouth and hand popped out. He held a finger against his mouth.
If only Felix could see himself right now. He looks ridiculous.
