His fate didn't change.

It didn't change that day, nor the next, as it hadn't for weeks before and, presumably, weeks to come.

Tired of his awful fate on one particularly courageous Friday night, he acted.

He wasn't sure what got into him as he picked up his phone. With shaking hands he pressed Tsukishima's contact number.

He felt reckless bravery swell in his chest as he asked Tsukishima to meet him tomorrow, a Saturday. 7:00 pm.

Where?

The roof of the abandoned office. His happy place. The no negativity zone that gave him the courage he needed.

Tsukishima was oblivious to the location, unlike Yamaguchi who liked to hide there a lot, so he agreed to show him there.

And the call a abruptly ended with a quick okay.

Yamaguchi felt a bubble of tension explode in his chest, as his emotions start to run over, and his phone fell onto the floor with a dull thud, slipping out of his slack hand.

He lifted his shaking hands to his line of sight and stared at them, as if trying to make this was real. He took a breath in and clenched them, to restore feeling to them.

Why'd he do that? He heard Tsukishima's tone on the phone, the tight strain in his voice. Why'd he force Tsukishima into this?

Okay.

Why would he ever consider himself to be so important to Tsukishima?

It was the next day and Yamaguchi dressed comfortable in his pastel pink sweater and baby blue leggings. He left his house with a piece of bread and a goodbye to his mother.

As he picked away little pieces of bread to the birds, he wondered what would happen. What would he say?

As a bold decision on his part, he decided he'd tell Tsukishima about his feelings.

But would he? What did he feel? Yamaguchi's palms sweat at the thought of it, and he nervously twisted the bread in his hand.

He wanted Tsukishima to be interested. To care about him. More than anything, he wanted Tsukishima to love him.

Tsukishima was already waiting for him right outside his door, playing with something in his hands. As Yamaguchi called out to him Tsukishima turned, making Yamaguchi's heart flutter. Even when Tsukishima payed him this slightest bit of attention he got excited like a puppy.

Maybe Tsukishima didn't want him to act this way. Maybe the way Yamaguchi talked upset Tsukishima.

In a bit of a somber mood after his thought, he calmly greeted Tsukishima. Tsukishima responded with a small hello before getting to the questioning. For convenience they walked as they talked.

"What's with the sudden plans Yamaguchi?" Tsukishima asked. Yamaguchi actually thought he was curious for a moment before he continued, "It's late out, and it'll be cold on a rooftop."

Yamaguchi's heart sank as he considered what he'd tell Tsukishima. "The sunset's pretty, a-and I wanted to talk to you about something."

He could feel Tsukishima tense up and then relax as he was considering the possibilities.

What did Tsukishima think he'd want to talk about? What was on his mind?

The rest of the walk was coated in silence.

Loud, suffocating silence.

Here's a long one to make up for the short chapter (~‾‾)~
