Yamaguchi wasn't sure what he had expected. Of course he'd screw it all up. Of course it would turn out like this.
It was just so irreversible, he felt like crying.
He'd ruined it all.
"It's okay babe, it's just a cake. We can pick one up at the store." Tsukishima whispered calmly into his ear.
Yamaguchi turned to face him. "B-but I made that cake special... I-it's a special strawberry shortcake..."
The cake had burned. Maybe Yamaguchi set the temperature in the oven too high?
Tsukishima sighed, seeing the sad state his boyfriend was in. "I really don't mind store bought, you know." He said, trying to comfort Yamaguchi in his own, slightly cold way.
"No, I'm going to make another!"
Tsukishima really seemed tired of him, but Yamaguchi didn't care. He tied on his apron and went back to work.
"Then I've got no choice to help you, make sure you don't screw it up again." Tsukishima murmured the last part, but Yamaguchi knew that he was actually trying his hardest to be super sweet.
"Okay, Tsukki!" Yamaguchi chirped, placing a peck on Tsukishima's cheek and he slid his hair into a ponytail.
They set to work, Yamaguchi carefully showing Tsukishima how to make the cake properly, stealing little pecks and nips in between ingredients.
After what would have probably been a shorter amount of time if Yamaguchi had worked alone, the cake was in the pan.
"Let me put it in the oven." Tsukishima offered.
Yamaguchi swatted him away. "No Tsukki, I think I can put a simple cake in the oven."
Tsukishima let out a short, bitter laugh. "You're such a klutz, you think I'd let you near a hot oven?" He slid on the glove and slipped the cake into the oven.
His statement might seem cold to anyone outside looking in, but to Yamaguchi it was incredibly sweet. Last week he'd burned himself on the stove really bad and cried about it for about an hour. Tsukishima could tell he was still nervous to go near it again.
The cake went in, then came back out once again, freshly baked. Tsukishima, too afraid of messing up to cake to be bothered trying to decorate, left that part to Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi finished it up and placed a little '1' and '0' candle on top, their tenth anniversary.
As he slipped out of the kitchen he set the cake on the table. Tsukishima seemed to have disappeared. "Cake!" Yamaguchi yelled, but not too loud. There was a baby in the apartment beneath theirs.
Tsukishima came out slowly and Yamaguchi knew he was nervous. Did he really think Yamaguchi screwed up the cake that bad? He giggled under his breath as Tsukishima tripped heading over to the table.
"What's on your mind?" Yamaguchi inquired, stepping between Tsukishima and the chair swiftly. Tsukishima looked down, then met Yamaguchi's gaze steadily.
"Just how much I love you."
He tried to step past Yamaguchi, but Yamaguchi just stepped with him. "Nice try Romeo, but I've seen your lying face. No shortcake 'til you tell me what's up."
Tsukishima looked down embarrassed and got down on two knees, and Yamaguchi thought he was going to beg for something. But then he got red and flustered and stood up, scratching the back of his head. "U-um... I'm... Uh..."
Yamaguchi smiled, encouraging him to take his time.
From behind Tsukishima's back came a little gold ring, all polished up and with a big diamond on top. "Um, th-this is my mom's old ring, my grandma's old ring, I... I think, and I was wondering... Would you be mine? Forever?"
Yamaguchi felt a little choked up as he asked, "Tsukki?"
Tsukishima got down on one knee. "I know we can't marry legally yet, but would you promise to be mine until we die?" He laughed lightly. "Who knows, maybe one day we will be able to marry."
Yamaguchi was shocked, but he laughed along too, tears flowing freely. "I'd love t-to stay with you forever, Ts-Tsukki!"
"Really?" He asked incredulously. "I mean... Yeah. Yes." He slid the ring onto Yamaguchi's finger, trying desperately to hide his wide smile, and immediately took Yamaguchi up into a long, tight hug. The type of hug that feels like a lifetime.
Yamaguchi pulled away, tears dotting the corner of his eyes. He let out a pitiful little sniffle laugh as he wiped his eyes. "My strawberry shortcake doesn't seem all that important now..."
"Are you kidding?" Tsukishima sat down, grabbing a slice. "I'm always a slut for strawberry shortcake." He murmured
Yamaguchi laughed and grabbed himself a slice. And with the ring on his finger a welcome weight, a part of Tsukki he'd always have, he ate his strawberry shortcake happily, the flavor sweeter than ever.
