Dabbling In Curiosity

I awoke in the middle of darkness. It was still night when I checked the time, or early morning if I were to get technical. 2:07 a.m. read the clock on my phones lock screen. I sighed and noticed a message from an unknown number. I ignored it and tried to go back to sleep. After tossing and turning for a bit it was suddenly light in my room and I decided to give up. I headed to the bathroom and showered.

When I got out I headed to my room, towel drying my hair with a separate towel then the one around my waist.  I sighed and hung the two towels up behind my door, pulling on fresh boxer briefs. I clothed myself in a pair of jeans and left my room to get breakfast.

I settled on a bowl of frosted flakes and ate them in peace until my mom came down in her suit. She worked as a secretary for some agency I never had interest to remember.

"You're meeting up with your tutor today, right?" She asked me sternly, and I knew no wasn't an option.

"Of course, what else would I do on a Sunday other than study?"

My mother wore a frown and approached me. She pinched my nose and glared in my eyes. "I've told you before I'm not putting up with that attitude of yours Jonas Rupert James. So stop throwing it at me. It's because of that boyfriend of yours, I just know it. You should be with a guy like your tutor, smart and kind. A good kid."

"Theo isn't a delinquent mom, he literally just has a tattoo. It's a symbol from a video game not a gang sign." I sighed at her. My mom didn't like Theo as he was a year older than I but looked a few years older. That was due to my natural baby face of course. But no matter how often I explained, the response was the same.

"I just have a feeling he's a bad influence on you. Ever since you two met you have been doing nothing but disappearing with him at times and locking yourself in your room to play games. Why don't you try out for a club or team?" My mother pestered me onward in the familiar way and I sighed again at her response. There was no reasoning with her at all.

"It's too late in the year to join a club, mom, and there isn't any teams in the winter." So I lied. But of course she would buy it because she did every single time. "Plus I'm doing study sessions now so I don't have time for that or my grades will drop again."

It was late October now and the weather was chillier so my mom would accept that teams were changing now. One good thing about Canada was it's cold winters. I loved snow, not so much the cold but sometimes we would have amazing ice storms and everything would look as though it had been crystallized.

After my mother left for work, I cleaned up my breakfast dishes and headed back to my room. I checked my phone and decided to read the unknown message.

"Hey the names Peyton uve probably never heard of me im zekes bestie i stole zekes phone and saw ur # and thought u would like to no more about this kid."

I blinked in surprise and responded questioning her reasoning behind this. She told me that she was bored and thought it would be funny to mess with Ezekiel by telling me embarrassing things. I refused the offer and deleted the messages that followed.

After a bit, I finally heard a knock at the front door and opened it, expecting Ezekiel. My eyes met with Theo's and he smiled weakly.

"Hey I thought I would pop in quick. I just have a... A question..." I let the boy in and he sat on the sofa beside me. "Yesterday, when we kissed... Did you feel something? I mean in movies they say you to feel a spark, or whatever, right?"

My face flushed and I bit my lip at the question. Was he implying that he did feel something? I, myself, just felt a rush of excitement from it but maybe that was the "spark"?

"I... Jonas, I didn't feel anything. What's that even mean?" He asked me seriously and I blinked in surprise. It obviously meant the opposite right? So he didn't have feelings for me.

"I think it means... That we might have rushed into this relationship.  I did feel something, Theo."

"That can't be it, maybe if we wait a bit it will happen. So let's keep trying." Theo insisted to me and I smiled gratefully. He wasn't going to give up on me in the end! "Oh shit, your tutor is coming right? I'll go now, thanks for having this random chat with me."

"No no, I'm glad you were honest with me."I smiled at him. Sure, it hurt some that he didn't feel anything when we kissed that time, but he wasn't about to just leave me because of it. I led him to the door and we hugged. He kissed my forehead gently and opened the door. I noticed someone walking up the driveway and grinned. "Nice timing, Theo. He's here."

"So you're Ezekiel. You're the one educating my dear, Jonas?" Theo looked at the other boy expectantly and gave him a once over. "You are no threat to me sir, have a good study session."

"Thanks...?" Ezekiel looked at the older boy confused.

I burst into a fit of laughter and smacked Theo's arm lightly. "Get going, you giant dork!"

After Theo left, I explained to Ezekiel who the random person had been and we went inside to start studying. But before that I decided to bring up this morning.

"So Peyton texted me. She said she wanted to tell me embarrassing things about you. I refused of course."

"Of freaking course she found your number in my phone. I leave it unattended with her for one minute and this happens. Don't listen to her, she's a loony. We are childhood best friends." Ezekiel explained to me and scratched the back of his head.

For a popular boy, he was rather shy in the end.
