hanahaki disease au

--

Hanahaki disease. Written in bold on your book.

You know this disease. It's a popular fairytale-like urban legend. A disease where you vomit flower petals when you got your feeling unrequited. A disease of unrequited love; people calls it.

Flower petals symbolize love; colorful, beautiful. It symbolizes how there were love you once felt - the one made your stomach full with butterflies. But that fluttering feeling can no longer make you feel the same, so your stomach forces them out; pretty flower petals as a reminder of an incomplete, ugly, one-sided love.

Your parents have told you in hushed whispers and terror faces about how scary the disease is. It's painful, not just physically, but emotionally too - so they said, even though your three-years-old brain can't really proceed the whole ordeal. They told you to be careful on loving someone; because once you experience it, you will keep vomiting petals until you find someone to love and would give you the same amount of love you offered for them.

Find someone who loves you, don't offer your love to someone who wouldn't love you back; their advice to you.

Easier said than done.

Well, but then again, it's just an urban legend. You never meet anyone with the said disease. You yourself didn't really believe the rumor too. It's just unlogical and rather dumb in your opinion.

"What are you reading?"

A soothing voice calls out to you. You turned your head to the owner of the voice. Your boyfriend, Akaashi Keiji, standing beside you as his green eyes trying to peek into your book.

"Whoa, Keiji, you surprised me!"

Akaashi just looks at you silently. His hand went up on top of your head as he calmly said, "Sorry, you seemed to be so engrossed in that book, I don't want to bother you."

"Come on, we need to hurry."

"Yeah."

Akaashi Keiji. An epitome of tranquility. The setter and vice captain of Fukurodani's male volleyball team. Your boyfriend.

Mostly emotionless, but have no difficulty on expressing his emotions. He laughs, he smiles; just like other people, but neutral expression usually displayed on his pretty face than not. A calm, mysterious air always surrounding him, making girls swoon more for him.

It's such a wonder that he accept your confession. You've been liking the boy since like forever. You always noticed him everywhere. On school, in the bookstore. Akaashi passes the playground you often find yourself when you feel sad, or in supermarket you frequently go to run errand from your mother.

At first, you just noticed him because of his face. He's pretty; there's no doubt on that, and the calm aura he gives made him almost ethereal.

Days passed and you began to notice him everywhere. You feel a tingling sensation of disappoint when you didn't see him in the cafetaria or bookstore.

You know that you're just a passing face for him, but you just couldn't help it. Years of admiring him from afar -- yes, admiring, absolutely not stalking -- get you to discover so many things about him, such as his character and what colour he likes. Each time you find new discovery about him just make you love him more.

(You keep falling deeper and deeper and deeper - you were drowning.)

"(F/n)?" you flicked your eyes to Akaashi, a pair of emerald gazing into your eyes back in return and you smiled. You're so in love with this guy and it feels so wonderful; everyday passes with more and more happiness and you can't be more grateful than this.

"I love you, Keiji." closing your eyelids, you feel your eyelashes flutters as you smiling brightly.

You can't see him as you're closing your eyes on the moment but you can feel his hand on top of your head, ruffling your hairs gently. "I love you too."

(You missed the flinch he makes.)

-

"You know about Hanahaki disease, Keiji?" he hummed as you peek at him from his shoulder. Warm summer breeze hits your skin; you're currently in the rooftop, eating lunch with your boyfriend.

(So cliche, but you like it.)

"Of course. My grandmother likes to tell me the story. It's a bad fairytale, to be honest." Akaashi says calmly, flicking your forehead in process.

"Ugh. Well, it's more like urban legend than fairytale, though." you said as you rub your forehead and pout at him. Akaashi just chuckled.

"But you're right, it's a bad fairytale. It's really illogical." you commented. "Like, I know heartbreak hurts; we're all know that, but vomiting flower petals?" you scoffed. "Nonsense."

"..."

"You alright there, Keiji?"

(He flinches; now you see it with your own eyes.)

"Actually, no." Akaashi inhales. "Do you want me to tell you a truth?"

(You hold your breath. You feel like shaking your head but you find yourself nod.)

"The truth is, I don't love you."

(You choked.)

"I tried, but I can't. The reason I accepted your confession was because I don't want to break your heart. I thought if we're going out, I will slowly learn to love you. I wait and wait and wait-- but even right now, I don't feel anything for you."

(A pair of emerald stare back at you and you can see how blank they were as they hold no love; no, there wasn't such thing from the start.)

"I really did try, I'm sorry." Akaashi steps closer, but you stepped back. "I'm sorry, I won't try to do it if I know I will hurt you more with this. I thought I will come to love you."

You offered a forced smile. "It wasn't your fault, Akaashi." you turned around. "Now, can you please leave me? I need some time alone."

"I'm sorry... (L/n)."

"It's alright."

Akaashi looks at you in silence before he left you alone in the rooftop. The sound of the door clicking and growing further footsteps were the proof that Akaashi left from both you and your life.

"It's... alright."

(It wasn't.)

Your chest felt so heavy and hurts, your body shook violently.

(It wasn't alright at all.)

Dropping on your knees, you cried and cried. The thought of waking up tomorrow without Akaashi holding you close was much more hurt than what you thought it would be. You don't want this, even now you still love him so much. You thought he loves you back when he accepted your confession, and yet...

You feel your stomach churn. Nausea comes over you and you gagged whatever on your stomach. You opened your eyes and shocked when you see what's lying on the floor in front of you. You keep gagging as you clutched your pained chest, crying even more harder.

(Flower petals.)
