What Heroes Do

Life has taught me how to fight,
How to make my way through the darkness, towards the light.
Years and battles have made me stronger,
I'm risking more, I'm enduring longer.

Many think battles consist of fighting,
But that's not what heroes primarily do,
The worst is to sit and wait in silence
Until everything begins for you.

Waiting for the war that might destroy you
And everything that you hold dear,
Waiting for the battle that might be your last one,
Waiting to face your biggest fear.

Waiting for a friend who might not come back,
Waiting for the message to be brought,
For becoming messenger yourself,
Where reality surpasses the darkest thought.

Waiting for the new morning, the new beginning,
Waiting for hope and new chances of winning,
For the moving of time and endless hours,
Waiting for magic, the greatest of powers.

Waiting to struggle, to fall, to bleed,
Waiting for victory or defeat,
While what really matters is who made it through,
Who's left for you to protect and who's protecting you.

Waiting to hear the helpless cries of grief,
While you struggle to hold up your belief,
Your belief in what's right and good and true –
As believing in that is what heroes do.
