Hydro

Chapter 1

“You really think you’re that special?” Jessica said cruelly, glaring down at some small framed girl. “Your just another little commoner in the land of the Psych’s, dimwit.”

I glanced up contemplating whether or not to say something, but then continued reading. I tried my best to ignore the rest of the naïve annoying freshmen class, all with the goal of trying to see the results of the Psychic Quotient Test.

Four more years.

The desks were all crammed back in the small Chemistry-Physics class, the bright lights almost giving me a headache. I buried my eyes deeper into the Jane Austen book as I heard Jessica grumble insults to another student while her left hand woman, Sydney giggled.

Ah, the educational system.

“C’mon, let’s go see how we did,” Maeve said turning towards me with glee illuminating her moss green eyes.

Jessica retorted from the front of the class as she peered back at us with an impish glare in her eye.

“You don’t even have to check,” as she knocked some of the crowd aside. “Ah, just as suspected. You’re at the very bottom Maxine. It’s a shame too, you finally would’ve had something about you that wasn't lame” she sneered in front of the class.

Maeve shook her head, her frazzled auburn hair not even moving as she did. She raised her hands putting them in a choking stance and jerked them about at Jessica’s back. I giggled until she turned back to us.

“What are you laughing at, idiot?”

“Nothing,” I responded quietly as she started to saunter down the row over to us.

Another one of the queen’s bring me downs.

“What do you want Jessica?” Maeve inquired resting her chin on her palm, staring up at her.

“Nothing, I just wanted to know what you guys were talking about,” she said with an imprudent shrug.

Mr. Massey sat in the front corner of the room, his tall frame slouched at his desk some somehow able to focus on reading the paper; how he was able to continue reading without noticing us was beyond me. Some other kids from the front looked back at us with curiosity at what Jessica would say this time.

“We were laughing at you,” I said bluntly, looking back down at my book.

“What did you say?”

I looked up at her and raised my eyebrows in annoyance. She gave an excessively squinted glare at me as she pursued her lips like a cannon preparing to fire.

“Step off, Jessica,” I suggested as I shut my book, looking up to meet her eyes. “We don’t need one of your little ‘pep talks’ today.”

“Oh shut up Maxine, you’re just upset because you’re a loser with no psych or potential.” She looked to Maeve who gave a sharp stern glance at the back of her head. “Even Maeve has a higher score than you.”

“It doesn’t matter if you have a psych right now, we all know once you lose it you’re not better than the rest of us,” Maeve said crossing her arms.

“Whatever, right now I am, and right now you guys are just stupid little normies.”

“It’s actually a shame you have powers, Jessica,” I stated, abruptly cutting in.

“And why is that?”

“With all that big fat lard of an ego you’ve been hoarding up there your head might just explode,” I replied with a grin. In fact, imagining even made my day slightly better. “But then again that wouldn’t be too bad. Then your big mouth wouldn’t be there to keep us company.”
