Hydro

Chapter 3

“Score one for the Maxinator!” Maeve said proudly, giving me a heavy pat on the back, nearly making me fall forward.

“Don’t call me that,” I said picking up a small bowl of strawberries from the food line. I popped one into my mouth, savoring the sweetness. “I didn’t even do anything anyways.”

“Ha, you led Jessica into ice and now her granny panties are my new phone background.”

“That’s disgusting,” I mumbled, plucking up the last small bowl of french fries.”

Today’s a pretty good days.

Fishing the five dollars out of my pocket, I handed it to the lunch lady before going through the double doors to the cafeteria. It smelled fresh with foods, the linoleum floor was clean, and everyone bustled around holding trays of food and talking. It was kind of ironic considering the rest of the school could almost be considered a dump due to budget cuts on Arizona education. Even our water pipes weren’t that great.

Maeve followed me to a deserted table in the corner of the busy hall. I didn’t have the nerve to draw at lunch today since now most of my paper from my sketch book was gone, and I would probably burst out crying to even look at it. Maeve ate one of my French fries to my annoyance while rambling on and on, skipping around to different topics before coming to one of the Psychic Elementals.

“What would you do if you were her?”

“Why does everyone think it’s a girl?”

Maeve shrugged, before taking another one of my fries.

“There are two boys already; it’s natural to assume that water is going to be a girl.”

I raised an eyebrow and popped the rest of the strawberries into my mouth.

“If I were her...”

Which I was.

“I would go to a water park and freeze all the rides so that it’d be some weird ice rink with tunnels and stuff.”

            She looked at me confused.

“Why would she be able to freeze things?”

I immediately stiffened, my second third time today. It was always when something hits close to home with hydrokinesis.

“Well water is usually associated with cold, so she or he could probably freeze it.”

“Whatever…look!” she brought her voice down to a whisper and pushed my head down, pointing to the double door where we had just come out of with our food. Jessica was walking with her posse and crutches as they rudely badgered people to move.

“Okay seriously? Overdramatic much?” Maeve said with a raised eyebrow.

“Where would they even get crutches at school?” I wondered aloud, pushing the glasses up the bridge of my nose.

Right when I said it, as if she had heard my Jessica looked right at me with a grim manly expression that almost made me laugh.

“You wanna go?” Maeve offered, eating yet another one of my fries. I pushed it away from her and shook my head.

“I don’t think she’d bother me out here. She may be cruel, but not everyone in this room is. I bet at least one person would come to my defense.”

“Good observation, but that doesn’t explain why they keep looking over here.”

They sat at one of the big circular round tables, some looking back at us and grimacing then looking back to talk. Abruptly, some of the guys leaned back in their seats while some girls helped Jessica up. They had there eyelinered eyes dead set on us.
