Not a day went by that Amber didn't feel alone, even when she was in a crowded room full of fancy people twirling around the ballroom. She would sit and watch their smiling happy faces and her mind would begin to wander, to meadows and fields filled with beautiful exotic flowers, she could sometimes even smell their strong overpowering fragrances fill her nostrils, it was intoxicating. For a brief moment she would feel content and happy. She would imagine herself in a flowing flower gown, with rose petals in her hair and soft sandals on her feet; she could see a young handsome man, offering her his hand as he asked her to join him on the dance floor in a slow waltz.
"Amber? Hey!! Are you in there?" Came the annoyed voice of her mother. Her tongue clicking angrily against the pallet of her mouth. A scowl marring her features as she glared at her young daughter.
"Sorry ma, guess I must have dozed off." She whispered in a quiet little voice. She looked down at her lap in shame; her mother knew exactly how to ruin her daydreams. Her young heart was filled with such sorrow and despair.
For Amber was always picked on, for her looks, her imagination, people found her downright strange. And as we all know, if you don't conform to the norm, you become an outcast, in a world filled with cynical and selfish people.
Slowly getting off the seat she had been occupying the last couple hours she headed to where her mother was standing in a corner, talking to all her book club friends. Anne Peters was the center of attention no matter where she went, what she wore or what she did. A classic beauty that was aging well. Whereas her daughter, Amber, was a mousy looking eighteen year old girl, a little chubby with curly red-brown hair and smoky grey eyes, that were dull and lifeless as the life the poor girl lead. Amber knew she was just downright plain, and it hurt that her mother looked at her with such disapproval, but that was the cards that fate had dealt her, and there was nothing she could do to change it. As she was so often reminded of by her parents.
"There you are, I've been looking for you for the last hour Amber. Just be grateful I found you before your father did" Amber hated when her mother scolded her in front of people. Her cheeks flushed bright pink and she lowered her head, staring at her sandals. She felt the sting of tears threatening to spill and swallowed as she tried to be brave.
"I'm sorry ma." She whispered just as Anne grabbed her by the arm and almost marched her to the front door where her father was waiting impatiently. On the outside he looked calm, except for the way his mustache twitched, that was always a tell-tale sign that he was about to lose his temper. The look he gave Amber was a look she knew so well.
The trip home was a disaster, her parents just didn't understand her, and the way they treated her, just seemed to make things worse, not that they noticed. Oh no, her father was much more interested in making more influential friends to help him further his career at the bank, and her mother was more worried about her next hair and nail appointment. Who cared that their only child was unhappy, frightened and once too often humiliated, certainly not them. Dane, Ambers father had accused her of not trying hard enough to impress the bank managers son. He knew a marriage would be just what he needed to get the promotion he had been wanting for so many years.
"Do you want to continue the luxurious life you live right now? Do you not want a home of your own? Children of your own?"
Amber merely nodded and stared off into the distance.
"Is it out of spite that you behave like this?" He huffed as they continued home.
That night at home, Amber was getting ready to get into her warm comfy bed. She was sitting in front of the mirror brushing her hair, and taking a good long look at herself. She wondered whether wishing upon a star really did work, because if it did, she would make sure she looked at the stars every night till she found a shooting star she could place her heart in. For her heart was filled with such sadness that she sometimes had difficulty breathing.
What Amber didn't know, was that she was being watched. Right outside her bedroom window was something that would change her life forever. It had been following her around for a while already, and it saw the aching in her heart, after all, fairies were there to bring joy to the world. Seeing this girls despair was what made Star decide to do something no other fairy had ever dared do. A human in their world? It was unheard of.
Star sat watching the girl brush her curly hair, she watched as the girl stared at herself in the mirror. "How could they all be so cruel?" she whispered to herself, her sparkling purple wings drooping with sorrow. "If only they could all see what lies beneath."
