Amber saw the other fairy and smiled to herself. She still couldn't believe that she was in a magical world filled with fairies. She couldn't help wondering why she had always day dreamed of this place, why it was all so familiar to her. She heard a rustle of leaves behind her and saw a streak of black fur head off towards the dense forest bordering the flowery meadow.
Without looking back or calling to her new tiny friend, Amber started following the black fur into the forest. She was sure she had seen a flash of bright green eyes staring at her while she had been admiring the flowers around her. And this being a magical world, she wondered what other creatures there might be. Just the thought of it excited her so much that she could hardly contain herself.
Deeper and deeper into the forest the shadow of a fur covered creature moved. Ducking under bushes and brushing against huge trees, dodging the patches of light seeping through the canopy of thick trees. Amber listened and watched, eventually losing sight of the creature all together, and suddenly panic overtook curiosity. She was lost. A frightful howl came from somewhere within the dark, dense forest. She could hear whispers and thumps, screeches and howls and sounds she couldn't even name. Silently she scolded herself for her stupidity. She started looking around to see if she could find traces which would show her which way she had come from. But to no avail. Daylight seemed to have slipped away without warning and the air seemed to be getting colder with each second that rolled by.
Roko had heard and seen the girl following him, and hoped that she would soon stop. As much as he was intrigued by her, he knew she would be in danger if she didn't stay close to the fairies. He peeked out from behind the bush he was crouching under and was met with the sight of her on her knees in a small clearing, her face buried in her hands and her shoulders silently shaking. He saw her shudder as she drew an unsteady breath. He could see teardrops seep from between her fingers, and his heart gave a sudden tight squeeze, like someone had taken it into their hand.
Quietly as to not startle the frightened, lost girl, Roko stepped closer, his ears flattened against his head and his tail held low yet slowly wagging from side to side. Upon hearing the movement behind her, Amber jumped up, fear written clearly across her tear streaked face. "Wh-who's there?" she asked in a shaky voice mimicking the shaking of her entire body.
Her eyes were huge and filled with terror, and Roko couldn't help but feel drawn to her. He knew humans didn't know that animals could talk, so instead he gave a soft whimper as he edged closer to her. She was looking straight at him; he himself could not take his eyes off of her. "Please don't eat me..." Amber whispered to herself more so than to the creature in front of her as the jet black wolf moved closer and closer. She wrapped her arms around her shaking frame and closed her eyes as tightly as she could, waiting for it to pounce and devour her.
Something cold and wet was nuzzling against her trembling leg and for a moment she thought that the creature had already bitten her without her feeling any pain. But no, something inside of her told her that she was still okay. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked down, she was met with the brightest green eyes she had ever seen, and they were looking right at her. She gave an involuntary shudder as she realized the wolf wasn't going to attack her. He was nuzzling her legs and giving soft whimpers of reassurance. Reaching her hand down cautiously, she held it for the wolf to sniff at, but instead it licked her hand and then rubbed the side of his face against her outstretched palm. Amber couldn't believe how soft his fur was, like woven silk, like the petal of a rose. Smooth and so very fluffy, even though he looked scruffy. With a little more courage seeping through her, she kneeled down and started scratching the black wolf behind his ear. Slowly a small smile spread over her still tear streaked face. At least she had stopped shaking.
Roko shut his eyes as she rubbed his head and scratched his ears. "If this is what heaven feels like, take me now." He thought to himself. Roko knew he should say something, but was reluctant to frighten the girl any more than he already had. He decided to keep pretending to just be a friendly wolf. A sudden wave of longing and desire to protect the girl washed over him, and he had to give himself a mental shake, somehow he knew that she was to be his soul mate, that he would die before he allowed any harm to come to her. He would protect her with his life.
"I don't suppose you know where I could get something to eat or drink do you boy?" The instant the words left her lips she giggled, she felt so silly for talking to the wolf, like it had any idea what she was talking about. The wolf was looking up at her so intensely when he suddenly blinked a couple times and started trotting off. She thought she was going to be left on her own to fend for herself again, but instead he stopped, looked at her with his luminous eyes and gave a little yelp, as if to say "follow me". And so she did.
They had been walking for a while in the dark, and she could hardly see as she put one foot in front of the other, stumbling over the roots of trees every now and then, but Roko stayed close to her. And every so often he would brush against her legs to assure her. Finally they heard the sound of water running over stones, she rushed forward and dipped her cupped hands into the clear blue water, it was icy cold and as she took her first thirsty sip she closed her eyes as the clear, sweet cool liquid slid down her throat. It was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted!
