Roko and Ruby had decided to call it a truce and give each other a chance. It had been a week since they had met, and in all honesty, they were getting on really well. Ruby would even go as far as to call him a friend. Of course, shape shifters being forbidden in the fairy meadows, she had to keep him well hidden from sight. But she felt it was worth it. She enjoyed his company, and he really was more a wolf than anything else. Since she had met him, he hadn't shifted at all. And she couldn't help wondering what he actually looked like.
Roko was having such incredible fun in the fairy meadows. And he enjoyed Ruby's company immensely. But he knew he had to leave eventually, he felt bad that she had to keep him hidden from all the other fairies. It must have put such a strain on her.
"Oh well... I will continue to have fun as long as I can." He thought to himself.
One morning while the two of them were taking their morning stroll, which had become a daily routine, they heard a loud buzzing sound, Ruby knew it meant a fairy was returning from the outer realms. But the question was who? Quick as a flash she signaled for Roko to crouch down low. He lowered himself to the ground, folding his big bushy tail around him. His ears pulled flat against his head. He could feel his heart pounding inside his chest in anticipation.
Amber looked around her with wonder and excitement written all over her face. This was it! This is what she was always daydreaming about. Every sight and smell, she knew it all. She couldn't believe her eyes, and she was speechless, she wished she had more eyes so she could take in every scene before her. She breathed in deeply, oh the fragrances washed over her, making her feel dizzy with pleasure. Slowly she lifted her hand to her cheek and pinched herself.
"It's not a dream... it's not a dream." She softly whispered to herself. All the while Star had been watching her, amazed by the light suddenly coming from the girl's body. She had known all along that the light had existed in Amber; it just needed to be set free. No light could exist within a broken heart, and Ambers light had been snuffed so many times, in such harsh ways that is was a miracle to see it take form. There had only ever been rumors about the human light and all its wonders. Few knew about it, and even less had ever witnessed its powers.
Slowly Roko lifted his head, peering through the flowers and tall grass at the sight before him. A human girl here? A low growl bubbled up inside of him; no human was allowed here, what did this mean? He watched as she looked around her, somehow he couldn't find it within himself to harm her. He saw the light emanating from her, and felt warm and at ease. She wasn't here to harm him or Ruby or anything he held dear.
"Wow!!! Star!!! Its more beautiful than I could ever have imagined!" Star beamed at her excitement, unable to take her eyes off of the girl's happy face. This had to be the first time she had seen Amber smile, really smile, not the kind you wear when u pretend. The sight of it made the little fairies heart jump with joy. She sparkled brighter and brighter.
Ruby finally decided it was time to make herself seen; slowly she came up behind Star and tapped her on the shoulder. Star spun around and found herself face to face with her best friend.
"So this was the secret you had been hiding from me?" Ruby huffed out at her friend. Ruby couldn't remember the last time she had been this angry, seeing as fairies didn't feel anger very often. Throwing her arms around the other fairy and hugging her tight Star said in a sweet voice "Oh but Rubes, isn't she wonderful? Just look at her!"
"What do you think you're doing Star? And without even consulting the elders! What will the Empress say?" Star looked at her friend and shook her little head. "Rubes, you know we need to do this. Lenopia has been without a real Queen for far too long. And the Empress is growing weaker and weaker with every passing day." Shocked at her friend's outburst, Ruby dragged Star away from Amber. "Will you please keep quiet; nobody is supposed to know that!"
Roko watched the two fairies argue with a grin on his face. He had guessed as much. With a weakened Empress unable to protect her fairies, darkness was sure to descend on Lenopia. Not that it really bothered him all that much, although he had come to grow fond of the raven haired fairy with her sparkling red wings. What held more interest to him though, was the presence of the human girl. It frustrated him somewhat; his human side was a side he had kept hidden for many years. A wolf is what he was, no matter what other blood trait he had flowing in his veins. Slowly as not to be noticed, Roko decided it was time to leave the meadow. Too much seemed to be going on at once, and he didn't want to be caught on the wrong side of the border that separated the fairies from the rest of Lenopia.
The two fairies seemed so deep in discussion, that neither of them noticed when Roko, still crouched low, started making his way towards the nearby woods.
