The cave was warm and musky smelling, not the bad kind of smell. It was welcoming. Amber crawled in as far as she possibly could, every bone and muscle in her body was aching and she knew she just couldn't go any further without some proper rest. The wolf that had been guiding her refused to let her rest as often as she would have liked. No, instead he would go behind her every so often and nudge her forward, or would grip the hem of her dress with his sharp teeth and pull her along. "Stubborn mutt" she would think to herself. But she had also been very grateful to the pitch black wolf with his bright green eyes; she would have found herself in a hopeless position if he hadn't come along and rescued her.
Amber stretched herself on the ground, lying on her back with her arms folded and cradling the back of her head. She had no idea what she was going to do now.
Slowly her mind began to drift, her eyelids feeling so very heavy, her breathing slowing down as she drifted deeper and deeper into the dark abyss of an exhausted sleep. Roko had been watching her; he could see the fear and confusion on her pretty face. Yet at the same time it was filled with a certain determination. He himself was confused, why hadn't he just taken her back to Ruby and Star? Something deep inside of him knew he couldn't, he felt it; somehow he knew that something dark and dangerous was approaching. It made him feel uneasy and nervous.
A huge yawn escaped and he decided it was time he got some much needed rest himself, he felt drained and exhausted. Edging closer to Amber, Roko lay down and rested his big wolf head on her shoulder, closed his eyes and fell asleep feeling anxious about what the next day would bring.
The smell of meat roasting over an open fire is what woke Amber the next morning. She stretched and yawned and looked over to the source of the smell. There sat the big black wolf, next to a campfire, watching the flames lick at what looked like some sort of poultry. Saliva was oozing from his muzzle and he looked as hungry as what she felt.
"Where'd that come from boy?"
The wolf just looked at her, his eyes squinting slightly as he licked his lips. He got up, trotted over to her and nuzzled her neck with his warm wet nose. Amber was starving by now, Roko knew this, so he once again tugged on her now somewhat dirty and torn dress, urging her to get up and help herself to the meat he had prepared for her while she had been sound asleep.
She jumped as her stomach growled loud and at that precise moment she really didn't care where the king's feast had come from. If she was to continue any further, she needed to build up her strength. She grabbed a piece of the meat and started ripping pieces off with her teeth, barely tasting it. Juices ran down her chin and soaked into her dress, but she didn't care, couldn't care. It's not like her mother was here to scold her. Survival was all she could think about. In the back of her mind she was thanking whomever had left this for her, later she would go in search of her savior.
Roko watched and waited, his own stomach letting out a fierce growl, his mouth was watering like a waterfall after a spring rain. He hoped that she would remember that he was still beside her. Finally after her second helping she realized that she wasn't alone. Her face flushed with embarrassment and she grabbed the rest of the meat away from the now almost dead fire, carefully placing it on the ground in front of the wolf. How could she forget that he had also been there for her when she needed him the most?
The wolf pounced the food and gobbled it up so swiftly.
After eating her fill and filling up on water, which she sipped slowly, it was time to continue forward. Where, she didn't know, but she had to keep looking. Maybe she could find her way back to her fairy friend.
