I stood paralyzed, watching as they killed the faceless person in front of me. Mercy. That’s one thing this person didn’t have, I watched in horror as the attacker looked my way, clearly aware of my presence.

Suddenly I feel everything shake, “ALEX!” I hear. I’m awake, it was all just a dream.

It takes me about a minute to take everything in. I first noticed my shirt was plastered with sweat, as I look around I see my sister eyeing me with a sympathetic look on her face. “Again?” she asks.

“They’re different scenes every time, and they’re so real.” I say rubbing my eyes.

“Alex, you’ve been having these dreams for weeks now. We have to tell mom and dad.” she says trying to reason with me.

I’m stubborn, I always have been and I doubt I’ll ever change, which is probably what made me decline her offer. Again. “NO! What are  they gonna think? That I’m scared of a little dream? I’m fine, just don’t worry.” I say whisper-yelling.

“We can’t just keep this from them! I know you’re worried about what mom and dad think of you, I get it, but don’t let that keep you from telling them things that are important to you! I’m tired of watching my little brother get continuous nightmares, I won’t have it anymore. I give you a week to tell them, if you don’t I will. Simple as that” and with that she left.

“Veronica please don’t.” I say more to myself than to my sister. Then I slowly lie back down, I stay awake though because I know if I fall asleep again I’ll have another nightmare.

I don’t know what time it was when I got up but I know it was pretty early so I decided to make breakfast. As I’m making the batter for the pancakes, pretty much the only breakfast I can make that tastes good, I wonder if I should just tell my parents over breakfast. I dismiss the idea when I see my dad walk into the kitchen. “Good-morning dad.” I say suddenly focused on the texture of the batter.

“Good-morning Alex,”he replies in the same monotone voice he always uses. “What are you making?”

“Pancakes” I say in the softest voice possible.

“I hope they’re good”

“Me too.” this was it, possibly the only chance of telling him about my recurring dreams,

“Dad?”

“Yes Alex?”

“Well, I need to tell you something.”

“Go on.”

At this point I could feel sweat forming on my forehead, “I don’t even know if I should be worried about this but I’ve been having these dreams...”

“Of?” he says urging me to continue.

“I keep having dreams of faceless people dying.” I decided to look up to face my father, big mistake. I look up to see my dad go pale, like all of the blood from his face got drained.

“Dad, are you okay?” I try to help him regain balance but he yanks my arm away from his and walks outside, slamming the door behind him.

“What was that?” I hear my mom say from behind me.

“I don’t know.” I could feel the tears coming, I couldn’t let my mom down too, I had to leave. Clear my mind for a little bit, I grabbed my jacket and my phone and walked outside with absolutely no idea where I was going.

Before I knew it I found myself at the nearest Starbucks, I guess you could say I liked coffee, actually scratch that I love coffee. It makes me feel warm inside, even when my heart feels cold and alone. I often find myself coming here when I need some time to think or when I’m sad.
