Chapter 52: who I would choose
-Bex p.o.v.-
The days seems to fly by. Hours slipped past like minutes. The months were passing in such a fast motion that before anyone knew it, the end of year exams were coming up. In only one short month.
"Lily, I'm not going to study with you," I rolled my eyes. Again.
"Why not? You need to study. The exams will be here before you know it." She said matter-of-factly.
I sighed, rubbing my temples to ward off the headache threatening to appear. "You've been saying that for months now."
"That's because we aren't taking normal exams anymore, these are the OWLs, they are the tests that will stop us from fulfilling our life dreams."
"It's just some stupid test. I'll take it like I do every other one. By not studying and following my instincts."
"It's important, you can't just guess on the answers, you have to know them." Lily sent me a disapproving look.
"Who said I didn't know the answers. And guessing works great for me," I smirked.
She sighed, "you need to study."
"I don't need to do anything but breath and eat." I smartly replied.
"Fine, if you don't want to study, I'll be in the library if you change your mind." Lily gathered her books and started for the door.
"Trust me, I won't." I smirked, looking out of the tower window, spotting the full moon.
I sighed aloud, my thoughts drifting off to Ozzy. After finding out that I was in fact hurt he wouldn't allow me to join him anymore. I was only allowed for special occasions. Like Christmas, or his birthday. How boring. I thought grumpily to myself. Of course I was only allowed to go on special occasions before, but he said that if we did good, I could come more often. I thought we did good. I mean it was only a minor scratch, nothing to serious.
Just then a loud howl sounded, slipping through the open crack of the window. I looked confused towards the outside, Ozzy wasn't this close. Who was it?
The next morning, when I sat with the Slytherins, Severus was tense. His jaw was clenched and he wouldn't look up from his plate for more than a few seconds at a time.
"Sev? What's wrong?" I frowned, watching him curiously.
He ignored my question. Continuing to stare at his plate. His head was bent forward, leaning over his plate. The dark strands of Severus' hair surrounded his eyes like a shield, blocking my view into his eyes.
"He's have a bad day," Lucius smiled apologetically. "Don't be too bothered by it. He'll be fine."
"Are you sure?" I questioned, stilling looking at Severus.
"He'll be fine by tomorrow," Reggie reassured with a smile.
"Alright, I'm heading off boys, I'll see you later." I smiled, standing up.
Lucius stood and hugged me, "I'm going as well. I promised to meet Cissy."
"Oooooh Cissy? How's life in paradise?" I giggled, pulling back from the hug to wiggle my eyebrows at him.
He chuckled, rolling his eyes, "yes, Cissy and I are doing well. I'm taking her on our third date this weekend."
I giggled, "I wanna hear every detail about it later."
"I might have to go on the date before I can tell you about it." He gave me a kiss on my cheek and ruffled me hair, "bye Aria." He turned and walked away.
I giggled and fixed my curls. "Bye Reggie," I grinned, hugging him across the table.
"See you later," he too kissed my cheek, "have fun, curly." He joked, pulling one of my curls straight and let it bounce back into place.
"Bye, I hope you feel better soon, Sev," I smiled hopefully at the boy. He didn't look up, so I bent and pecked his cheek.
As I turned the corner, heading to the courtyard I sighed aloud. "Why is everyone so sad today?"
They didn't even look up. James was sitting on one of the stone benches, with his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands, he was frowning deeply at the ground, his hair looked messier than it usually did, proving that James had been running his fingers through it out of anxiousness. Sirius was away from the group, standing against the tree, his arms were crossed and he was glaring at the ground, his grey eyes were filled with some unknown emotion. Remus was sitting on the ledge of the fountain, looking down into the clear water, his clothes were rumpled, he didn't look as professional as he normally was. And Peter was standing by the entrance, only feet from me, he was looking at each of the boys, unsure of who to go comfort. You could feel the thick tension in the air, something was wrong.
"Peter?" He turned to me suddenly, not aware I had been standing there. "What's wrong with them?"
He hesitated, "umm t-they're just h-h-having a bad day."
I glared out at the boys, "I'm not stupid, what happened? Sev was sulking at breakfast and now here you all are, basically glaring at each other. What happened?"
James' head flung up, "Sev? What did he say?" He glanced at Remus' anguished face before looking back to my angry one.
"Nothing! He didn't say a thing! You guys did something to him, what was it?" The tips of my hair had begun to change color, the red sticking out against my normally brown hair.
"We didn't do anything." James replied quickly.
My glare darkened, "I already deal with you guys constantly pranking and poking fun at him, but I'm done. I can't handle it anymore. He's always sad because you guys mess with him, insult him, and do horrid things! Just stop okay, I'm through with just standing by and making excuses for you. He was my friend first and I'm always going to stand by him, no matter how close I've gotten to you. I love him and I can't stand seeing him in such a bad mood everyday. Either fix what you caused or don't speak to me again." I turned away, going back into the castle.
"Gorgeous!" Sirius called after me.
"What do you want Black?"
"How do you expect us to just get along with him so suddenly? We can't just become friends!" He argued.
"I never said you had to be friends, I just want my friends to be civil to each other." I frowned, "but seeing as your pride always seems to get in the way, don't speak to me anymore."
I left the courtyard, going to the Owlry. Entering the room filled with hooting birds of every different type, I pulled a piece of parchment and a quill from my bag.
Quickly I wrote a note to Ozzy, asking about the monthly transformation. I couldn't help but fear who was howling so close to the school, if Ozzy hurt anyone he would never be able to forgive himself.
Sending my note off to Ozzy with one of the tawny school owls; I smiled at the other birds. Taking in the soothing feel of the environment. I loved being around animals, maybe I should just spend a day in the Owlry, taking the form of an owl, just hanging out with them. I couldn't help but think to myself.
Leaving the Owlry I was surrounded by students, breakfast was over and everyone was heading off to class. I should have stayed with the owls, I thought glumly, heading to transfiguration. My assigned seat next to Sirius Black was not something I was looking forward to.
I sat in the seat, not sparing Sirius a glance, staring straight ahead. A bored expression took over my face, we were still learning how to change chairs into barnyard animals, something I had mastered the first day we began to study it.
Throughout the class, as Sirius tried to speak to me, I was mindlessly flicking my wand; turning the chair into all sorts of farm animals. First a horse, then a pig, next a cow, a sheep, a herding dog, over and over again.
As soon as the bell rang I left the room. Not sticking back when Sirius called after me, not even slowing down.
I found myself at the tree, waiting for Liam to come along. "Bex!" He grinned, "how are you today?"
"I'm great thanks," I smiled back. I pondered for a second before just asking, "Liam? Do you know anything about why the boys are so mad at each other? Or what happened with Severus?"
His eyebrows frowned in concentration, "well I couldn't sleep last night, so I went down to the common room, to sit by the fire so I wouldn't wake up the boys in my dorm." He started, "and while I was down there, they entered really early in the morning. They looked really tired, like they didn't sleep all night. They were also hurt, they had little scratches and stuff. They didn't see me there and walked right past me, they were arguing about something. I think it was about some prank they pulled on Severus. James was mad because Sirius had told him how to get into a secret place and Severus saw something bad. James had to go save him, to make sure he didn't get hurt. Remus was really sad because they just came from the Headmaster's Office, I guess your dad had to make sure they were all safe and made them promise not to go back."
"That's what you heard?" I asked, making sure.
He nodded, "yeah, I don't know where the place is, but they called it 'the shack'. Whatever that means." He shrugged, not understanding what any of it meant. "Oh! And James said something about a furry little problem. I don't know what that is though," he trailed off.
"That's okay Liam, thanks for telling me all of that." I smiled brightly.
We continued to talk, the two of us, about the regular stuff. Classes, likes and dislikes, we even go into a small argument about which was better: liquorice wands or sugar quills. We didn't mention the boys anymore.
The week continued on with Severus still being moody, probably not liking that he had been saved by the boy he hated. The tension was clear between the boys, James was mad at Sirius for telling Severus about this secret place, and Remus was most likely mad about being referred to the Headmaster. Peter was still unsure of who to side with.
I found myself not only avoiding the boys, but steering clear of Severus as well. I couldn't handle his sad mood, it was bringing me down. Lily badgered me about what was wrong with the boys and Sev, so I stayed away from her too.
I now ate in the kitchen. Lucius and Regulus would take turns spending time with me and Severus. When Lucius was trying to get Severus back into the normal swing of things, Regulus was with me out on the grounds. When Lucius are in the kitchen with me, Regulus was urging Severus to eat in the great hall. When Lucius was studying with with Severus, Regulus and I were laughing in the courtyard. Basically when one was with Sev, the other was with me.
I felt bad for having to split them up, forcing one to tend to Severus while he was in a bad mood. But I couldn't handle it, as much as the guilt ate at me, I wasn't able to fix it.
The only people I was near were Lucius, Regulus, and Liam. Everyone else I tried to stay away from. I couldn't handle it anymore, of they didn't get along soon I would be forced to pick a side. And they knew who I would choose. It will always be Severus, no matter how close I was getting to the boys. It was always Severus, it is still Severus, I will always be Severus. Always.
