Deception-

I was snuggling on the couch in the living room, a few blankets wrapped around me and a nice cup of hot chocolate in my hands. In front of me, was a television tuned into the local news.

It was pouring outside, the rain was splatting down on my window, making very loud splattering noises. I sighed and got up, leaving my cozy setup behind to draw the curtains close.

Just as i was about to return to the couch, someone knocked on the door. I went forward to open it and standing right in front of me was a drenched boy.

"Miss," his teeth was chattering ,"I didn't have an umbrella with me, could I stay here for a while until the rain stops?"

The boy was probably a teenager, very innocent looking and he looked like he was in a dire need of shelter from the rain. It would be cruel of me to reject him and leave him in the rain, so I decided to let him in.

As he entered the house, he caught sight of a huge gold bar displayed on a shelf. He was about to stare at it, but quickly looked away.

"Would you like some hot chocolate?" I asked him, already heading to the kitchen and oblivious to what was happening.

"Yes please, thank you." he muttered and started staring at the gold bar again. He pointed to the bar and asked innocently, "What is that?"

I stepped put of the kitchen and looked over to where he was pointing, "That? That is a gold bar. Why?" Who would ask such stupid questions? I went back in and focused back into making his hot chocolate.

"Nothing," I could hear him say.

When I was done making it five minutes later , I went to the living room but no one was there. I noticed the wet puddles on the floor heading towards the door.  The door was wide open. It was still heavily raining outside and out in the rain, was a boy running with something shiny in his hand.

I turned to the shelf, the gold bar was missing from its usual place. That's when it struck me, no wonder he asked so many questions about the gold bar, he wanted to steal it. I was so naive, letting a stranger into the house.

I shrugged, the gold bar was not made out of gold anyway, it was made out of plastic shaped like a bar and some gold paint. I left it on the shelf because I wanted to dry the paint. Besides, I could always make another one.

As I closed the door, I could hear an announcer from the news say, "There has been many thefts of valuable items recently due to allowing strangers into the victims house........"
