The Picture

I smiled as I packed my last bag. I start heading to VidCon tomorrow! Jack keeps texting me about it. He seems really excited. Bob and Wade, too. Mark hasn't texted me since he wanted me to play Minecraft with him. I didn't really care.

I placed the bag with the others and went back to my studio to finish recording some games. What should I play? Oh! Subnautica! I opened the game and started my recording. "What's goin' on, everyone! [YT/n] is back and welcome to Subnautica!"

I finished recording a few episodes and edited them so I could upload them later. I ran back into my room and made sure everything was packed. When I was satisfied, I looked at the clock. 9:30. I've got a little time for dinner. I went to my kitchen and pulled out something quick and easy to make.

I danced around as I made my food. *RING-RING*

I slipped my phone out of my pocket and saw the contact ID I set for Mark. It was an old picture. I frowned at the memories and answered the call. "Yes, Mark?"

"___! What're you doing right now?" he asked.

"Eating," I snapped as I shoved some food in my mouth.

"Well, stop stuffing your face. I'm coming to get you."

I choked on my food and started coughing. "What do you mean?" I asked when I stopped dying.

There was a knock on the door. I walked over and opened it. "___!" I jumped and the sound of Mark screaming in my face and my ear.

"Jesus, Mark. What are you doing here?" He frowned slightly.

"Figured I'd pick you up and bring you to the hotel we're all staying at." I sighed and let him in.

"Fine, whatever. Let me get my stuff." He rushed forward.

"I'll get it! You go finish eating." I looked at him suspiciously and walked back to the kitchen. Weird, I thought.

I listened as he plundered around my room getting my bags. I finished the last of my food as he came stumbling downstairs and towards the door.

"This everything?" he asked, stumbling. I rushed forward and grabbed a couple bags so he didn't drop anything.

"Yes, be careful! Why'd you get everything at once?" He shrugged and kept walking to the door. I opened it, let him through, and followed behind him with the bags he almost dropped.

I went back in to double check that I grabbed everything I'd need. When I was satisfied with the inspection, I walked back down and saw Mark leaning against the wall looking at a framed picture.

I noticed that it was the picture that I also used as his contact ID. He was just staring at it with a deep sadness. "Mark?" He jumped. "I'm ready." He nodded and turned back towards the door.

I followed behind him to lock the door and took one last glance at the picture sitting on my bookshelf. The memories from that day were painful.

*7 Years Ago (2009)*
I grinned as my best friend pulled up to my driveway. "Marki!" I screamed as the dark haired male stepped out of the car. I rushed out and hugged him tightly. I hadn't seen him in years.

We had gone to school together when we were younger, but I had moved away. We kept in touch through our parents during our youth, and began talking on our own when we were both old enough for a cell phone.

His arms spread open and I plowed into his chest. He laughed and hugged me. "Hey, ___. How ya been?" I grinned and buried my face in his neck.

"I've been okay. New house, new life, I suppose." He looked at me with fake hurt spread across his face.

"New best friend?" I shook my head.

"Never!" He grinned that goofy smile of his and I smiled back. "So, what's on the agenda for today?" I asked. He shrugged.

"I was thinking maybe the fair or just hang around town." I nodded and he opened the door on his car to let me in. I chuckled at his manners and slid on the seat.

He ran over to the drivers side and jumped in. I grinned at him and he grinned back. Today's gonna be a good day, I thought to myself.

We rode for a while, talking about the years we missed from each other. When we finally pulled into the fair, I started jumping in my seat.

"Calm down, ___. It's just the fair." I looked over at him, still bouncy.

"But I haven't been in years." He laughed and stepped out of the car. I went to open my door but almost fell instead, because it was already open. I glared up at Mark and he laughed.

"Sorry. Force of habit." I giggled and stepped out beside my best friend. We got through the booth and walked around the fair grounds for hours playing games, winning prizes, and taking random pictures.

Before we left, we decided to take a picture of us and all of the prizes we won. We asked someone to snap a quick picture for us and surrounded ourselves with our winnings. We posed and grinned as the person took the shot.

"Thank you so much!" I said as I took the camera. She grinned.

"No problem!" She glanced over at Mark. "You're really lucky. He's cute," she whispered to me. I blushed.

"Oh, we're not..." She laughed and walked away. I went back over to Mark and helped him pick up the prizes. We piled them in his car and got in the front seats.

"Where to now?" he asked. "Oh! Let's get the pictures developed!" He started the car and drove to the nearest store that was open. As we went in, he smiled at me. "Today was fun."

I grinned. "It really was. How long are you staying in town?" He frowned as he handed the clerk the camera.

"I'm not sure." He took the receipt from the worker and we walked out. We had to wait for the pictures. I followed behind him and got in the car when he opened my door.

"It probably won't be longer than a couple weeks." I nodded and looked out of the window. We decided to go eat before we got the pictures developed. McDonald's was easier. We ate silently and left the same. We pulled back into the store and I sighed.

"What's wrong, ___?" he asked before getting out. I looked over at him and shook my head. "___, seriously. You can't lie to me." I looked back out the window and held back tears. Something about Mark had been off all day. He wasn't the same. He was acting different than he used to. Even the past couple of months were off.

He got out of the car and walked into the store I stayed back and watched the birds fly overhead. He came back out a few minutes later and opened the door. "They gave us two copies of each one. Here." He handed me an envelope.

"Thank you." I opened it and looked through everything. From pictures taken at the top of the Ferris Wheel to funny pictures we took of each other playing games. And the picture of us with the prizes. I decided to frame the picture of us and put the rest in an album I had.

Mark drove me back to my house in silence. Just like at dinner. He walked me to the door and sighed. "___, I'm sorry." I looked up at him.

"For what? You haven't done anything wrong." He looked into my eyes and quickly looked away.

"I lied to you. The reason I came here today..." He paused and looked at me with tears in his eyes. "I came here to tell you that we can't be friends anymore. I'm sorry."

And he walked away.
