Hello Booknerd92!
>> Carol Chan's Profile <<
Dating sites are awkward. I'm awkward. 20 years old, bookish, pale complexion...um...see? Awkward.
Likes: reading, computer programming, collecting postcards of frogs (ok, I'm weird), reading, gaming, listening to music, flailing (aka "dancing"), green tea mochi, Star Wars, learning new languages, animals, reading, and especially READING!
Dislikes: mean people, spaghetti, rollercoasters
Looking for a girl my age who is animal-friendly, doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, and who will love me for who I really am inside. I'm shy, but affectionate.

I've been on this site for three months and I've had NO contact whatsoever. Only four views? Really? Am I really that hopeless? Carol asked herself. Maybe I'm just not relationship material, she sighed.
Turning away from her laptop, she resumed her programming work on the adjacent desktop computer. She was building a two-player cross-platform game in hopes of eventually selling it as an app for smartphones. This was usually how she spent her time on weekends. Weekdays were for school, study, and exams. Weekends were for fun. So why wasn't this continuing to be "fun" every single weekend?
Carol sighed again. And typed in one more line of code.
Fun.

Carol opened the message she'd received from her friend, Jen. Reading the subject line of the email, her eyes had already widened in excitement. In response, she typed back a short but sweet "Skype me right now!" and in moments, Jen's call rang through her speakers.
"We are going, right?" Jen immediately prompted.
"What kind of question is that? Of course!" Carol barked at her laptop screen.
"Spill it, who are you cosplaying as?" Jen wanted to know, figuring Carol was already planning the smallest details of each and every thread of her potential costume.
"Not telling!" Carol smiled.
Jen shook her head. Suddenly shifting gears, she remembered the dating site she'd found "accidentally" and wanted to refer Carol to. She knew her friend was getting desperate to meet someone special, and wasn't having any luck with her Luvgurls4life.com membership. She sent her a link and waited for Carol's opinion.
"Geek to Geek? I can't believe such a website exists! Oh, Jen how did you ever find this? This is exactly what I need!" Carol said.
"Never mind. Just get your profile up and running!" Jen encouraged.
While they left their Skype video window open, Jen could hear Carol frantically hammering away at her keyboard. "You're doing it now?" she asked.
Carol made a face. "No, I'm doing a profile search to see who's on the site first. Did you know there are men on the website?"
"So? You can restrict your search to women-seeking-women" Jen clarified.
"Annnnnd...a whole bunch of "women" turn up with photos of men as their profile image," Carol rolled her eyes in disgust.
"Oh," Jen had no comeback. She opened a comic book and began to read, while Carol continued her research.
After a bit more keyboard-smashing, Carol heaved a dreary sigh.
"Nothing?" Jen asked, not taking her eyes off her comic book.
"Just one girl. In ...Alaska? Why aren't any closer to me? This sucks, I'll never find a girlfriend," Carol pouted.
Hearing her tone of voice, Jen looked up at her computer screen. Seeing her friend disappointed really bothered her. She had been so certain this website would be the perfect place for someone as dorky as her friend, to locate someone just as dorky to go on dates with. Major fail.
"Aww, don't be sad. Maybe you're just trying too hard. Ever hear of finding something when you stop looking for it?" Jen asked.
"Yeah. I also heard that nerdy chicks don't get dates, and grow old living with their mom," Carol crossed both arms across her chest and stared at Jen.
"Carol! Come on! Hey, at least you broke that stereotype. You live alone!" Jen broke into barking laughter. She had the inability to laugh naturally. Sometimes Carol wanted to tickle her to death, to see if she would involuntarily giggle like a normal person. But she never dared, and instead accepted that her friend would always have an anxious-sounding, loud laugh. Sort of cute once the embarrassment of it wore off.
"Okay, I want to get back to my programming. See you in school tomorrow?" Carol asked.
"Yup!" Jen nodded. She waved at her screen. Carol waved back, and disconnected from Skype. Turning back to her desktop computer, she buried herself in code for the next three hours.
