Laughter began to fade out
Hesitation seeped in
In the dead quiet,
His inaudible breathing seemed turbulent to my ears.
I wished he was beside me
Instead of the other end of the call
'This is it then I guess'
'It's for the best'
We knew, we understood
Ending the call would be the final goodbye
I took in every word he said
Locking the melody of his voice in my head
Like immature adults we argued
'You cut the call'
'No, you first'
I laughed at our stupidity
Despite my tear streaked face
Which said an entirely different story
3 failed attempts, the 4th one did it
'Be serious this time' he said
'1..2..3..'
4 seconds of silence followed by a click
The end tone filled my ears and dulled my senses
Suddenly, I couldn't breathe;
The air knocked out of me
One mississippi
I held the phone to my chest
Gripping it till my knuckles turned white
Two mississippi
Searing pain travelled my body
Eyes welled up, vision turned blurry
Three mississippi
I could hear my heart
Shattering into irreparable pieces
I lost count of the seconds
My mind wavered to him
It was over, he was gone
The one thing that kept me alive
My kryptonite
