It was so silent in the room that you could hear a pin drop. Jacob looked between Bella, Kate, and Alice wondering what was happening. Kate stayed staring off into space slightly shaking on the spot.
Bella was the first to act. She pushed past Kate and went upstairs to her room. Kate landed into the cabinets and stood there still stunned. Jacob was growing concerned now and came up to her.
"Kate, what the hell is going on?" he asked her.
She repeated the words she said to Bella from what seems like a lifetime ago, "Carlisle told me about the Volturi when I first turned. They're a very old vampire family. Fifteen hundred years ago, when they first rose to power, the Volturi led the hunt for the sirens. They wanted to eliminate all of them. It's because of them, that there are very few of us left. They will never stop hunting us. If they find me, they'll kill me on sight."
Many emotions crossed Jacob's face as he processed this, "They won't touch you."
"That's not up to you," she said slowly.
Fear had crept into every part of her and nothing Jacob did could rid her of it. She looked at Alice.
"Where is he now?" she asked her.
Alice frowned, "He's with them."
Kate then did something so unexpected Jacob and Alice didn't know how to respond. Kate stared right into Alice's eyes with her own glowing bright blue.
"No matter how they use their powers you will not expose me to them. The memories of me will be locked away no matter how hard they try to access them. They will not know of my existence from the Cullens," Kate's voice was low and soothing as it washed over Alice. Alice's eyes glazed over as the command took hold of her. Now bound to Kate's will Alice returned to normal and took a few steps back from the siren shaking her head.
"Alice," Bella cried as she came thundering down the stairs towards the rest of the group. She paused in confusion as she looked at everyone else not knowing what to do or say. "I'm ready, let's go."
Alice seemed to snap out of it and rushed to her car with Bella following behind. Jacob and Kate looked to each other quickly and seemed to have the same thought. They moved at the same time to try to persuade Bella not to do the thing she was about to.
"He left you, Bella. He didn't want you anymore, remember that?" Jacob asked her.
Bella kept ignoring the two of them as she made her way to the car.
"I'm not going to let him kill himself out of guilt," she said sadly.
As Bella got in the car, Kate tried to persuade her, "What about Charlie, what about Jacob, what about me?"
"Are you coming?" Bella ignored her other questions and asked one of her own.
Kate recoiled from the car as if she had been shocked, "Do you want me to die? You know what they'll do to me if I go. Besides, Edward isn't worth it."
A sad but angry looked crossed Bella's face, "Then goodbye, Kate."
She looked at her sister one more time before storming into the house. She could hear Jacob follow her all the way into her room. Before she could even get a word out, Jacob pulled her into his arms.
"I'm going to lose her again," Kate mumbled.
Jacob rubbed her back softly, "And I'm going to lose one of my best friends."
Kate looked up at him for the first time realizing how badly this was hurting him. She pressed their foreheads together as they stood there in silence.
"Why is it that the people we care about leave us?" she asked him.
"I guess some people are meant to be in pain. It just makes the good moments even better. Like the days on the beach, or when we're at Emily's, or when we're together..."
Kate smiled sadly, "You're poetic, you know that right?"
"It's all part of my charm."
Kate pulled back from him and went to the mirror to wipe her face from the grime of the day. In the mirror she saw Jacob watching her with a sad expression. She wanted nothing more than to smooth out the frown on his face but she knew this wasn't something that could easily be fixed. Bella had just drawn a line in the sand and now everyone had to choose their sides.
"You should go tell Sam what's happened," she said to him.
"I don't want to leave you alone."
She shrugged, "Charlie will be home soon. I won't be alone. Besides I've got to explain to him why Bella disappeared so it's probably best that you're not around."
Jacob nodded slowly then came up to her and kissed her on the top of head before leaving to do as she suggested.
Kate walked over to the wall that was covered in pictures and drawings. She looked at it before she ripped her hands down its front and tearing some off. Pictures of her and Bella, the trees around the house, and pictures of the sisters as kids fluttered to the floor. She watched them fall leaving them there when they hit the ground.
She heard the downstairs door opening and Charlie's boots hitting the floor. Kate took a deep breath and went down stairs to face the storm that was about to be Charlie Swan.
