Chapter 24 |

"Why'd you take the last apple sauce dude!" Someone says from behind me.
My blood heats and I turn around flinging my hood off. My face falls.
"Sam?"
"Jace."
We stare at each other for awhile until Jace looks down breaking the silence. "I'm sorry Sam. I shouldn't have yelled it's just apple sauce." Jace chuckles softly.
I crack a smile. I haven't had a full conversation with him in awhile. The sound of his voice makes me happy. "It's cool, you can have it." I toss the apple sauce onto his tray. "I was probably only going to eat half of it anyways." I shrug.
He smiles. I start walking to the lunch table I usually sit at by myself. I sit down and pull out my book. I hear another tray plop down and I look over and see Jace.
"Why are you sitting here? Shouldn't you be sitting next to Mindy?" I roll my eyes.
"What if I miss sitting next to you?" Jace grins. Butterflies fill the inside of my stomach.
Wait...butterflies? I haven't had those in awhile.
"I sit by her everyday and listen to her go on and on about gossip. It gets old." he sighs.
I take a deep breath. Him sitting here is going to draw attention to me. I hate attention. I'm so antisocial it's scary.
It's hard to see the light when shadows are all you know.
But I miss him. So this may be the only time I get to talk to him for awhile. I'll just be cool.
I smirk. "I'll only let you sit here if you share that apple sauce with me."
Jace raises his eyebrows and laughs. "Fine."
I watch him tear open the apple sauce and pour some onto my tray.
Why isn't this awkward?
We've been through so much together and we're talking to each other like nothings ever happened. I feel so comfortable around him, it's like I've known him forever.
"There you go! Bon Applesauce!" Jace laughs.
Bon applesauce? I'm screaming.
I smile so hard my cheeks hurt. "You're so stupid."
"I can be stupid at least I don't read for fun." Jace says while picking up my book and skimming through the pages.
I snatch my book out of his hands. "Reading is fundamental." I say proudly.
"More like fundaboring." Jace whispers.
I laugh and softly punch him in the arm. "Shut up."
"Make me." Jace grins.
I give him that 'what the fuck did you just say' look.
Jace's face drops. "Are you going to the dance tonight?"
I flush pale. That was a random subject change. All of the sudden I feel the awkwardness I didn't want to feel surround us.
"No. I don't have a date." I fake laugh. I wish I had a date.
Jace looks down sympathetically. "Oh." he says quietly.
My head jolts to the right as soon as I hear Mindy's high heels snapping on the ground. I glare at her as she walks over to us.
"Jacey cakes what are you doing sitting next to her?" she side eyes me with a hateful look. I awkwardly look down at my lunch. God I wish I could just stab her in the eye.
"She's my friend," Jace runs his fingers through his hair.
I don't know if I would call him my friend, but whatever.
"Friends sit with friends. I don't see why this is such a big deal as to why you need to come over here and question me babe?" Jace says innocently.
Babe? Ew.
She leans over and starts playing with his hair. I can tell he's annoyed. "But I want you to come sit with meee." she pouts.
"I sit with you everyday." he says bluntly.
"You're my boyfriend, you're supposed to sit with me. Not some lame girl that reads for fun!" Mindy snaps.
Jace widens his eyes and picks up my book. "Reading is fundamental." he winks.
Mindy gives him a confused look.
I cover my mouth with my hand to shield my laughter. All this playfulness reminds me of how we used to be when we first met. Jace is so uplifting and funny. God I love him so fucking much. I just wish I could forget about the fact that he betrayed my trust.
There you go again with your trust issues Samantha.
He means so much to me but I just can't trust him until he proves himself.
I break out of my thoughts and realize Mindy is still hovering over Jace. I can't look at him without thinking about what happened.
I take a deep breath. "Jace just leave."
His eyes go soft once he hears those words fly out of my mouth.
"But I thought you said I could sit here?" He says hiding his frown with a fake smile.
"I changed my mind. We're not friends anymore and I don't like being around you." I say. Yes I do. I want to spend the rest of my life with him. What the fuck am I saying?
Jace's facial expression changes and I can't tell if he's either hurt or mad. Or both.
"Sam we haven't spoken in so long I just thought-"
I cut him off. "Just leave so I can finish my book." I say bluntly.
He furrows his eyebrows and stands up tossing the rest of the apple sauce onto my tray. "See you around." he says coldly. Mindy sends me a death glare before clinging onto him.
I watch them walk away. Stop him. Tell you love you him. Forgive him. I can't.
I can tell I just hurt his feelings. I did it for the best. He doesn't need me anyways. I pull out my book and continue reading.

I walk into my house and drop my book bag in shock. My jaw drops. My living room is covered in beauty supplies and dresses. I mentally gag. My mom pops up from behind the couch holding a flat iron.
I scrunch up my face. "Uh mom, what is all this?"
"IM MAKING YOU GO TO THE DANCE SURPRISE!" She yells with a huge smile on her face.
"You're what?!"
