CHAPTER 2

Keith opened his eyes and was met with a warm, pale sunlight shining from the window to his left. He turned his head to look out the window. Outside was a pale, barren landscape with dirt as far as he could see. He realized where he was: he was home. He was lying in his bed, safe and warm, and feeling very well rested. He sat up and put a hand on his forehead, wondering why he could swear he felt sick earlier, but when was earlier? He had been sleeping all night long, right? There was no reason for him to feel any different since this was his house.

"Keith!"

His eyes widened. "Mom?" He asked himself quietly. His heart began to pound as he imagined his mother. He threw the blanket off of himself and ran out of his bedroom and into the kitchen. At the stove was his mother: tall, thin, and long, straight black hair.

"Mom!" Keith called out.

At once, she turned her head and smiled at him. "Good morning, Keith. Did you sleep well?"

Keith smiled wide. He hadn't felt himself smile like this in what felt like ages. PANG. A shot of pain surged through his head and he felt weak immediately. "Ow!" He cried out.

His mother walked over to him and put her hand on his forehead. "Are you okay?"

Keith raised his head to look his mother in the eyes. "I'm fine...It felt like a headache..." He then felt confused. Why did it feel like he missed his mom so much? Wasn't she always here? He was sure there was nothing out of the ordinary. Without a second word, he went to the living room and sat on the couch, waiting for breakfast. Something felt wrong, but he couldn't figure out what it was.

"Here," his mother said. She walked towards him with a plate in her hand. "I made you your favorite."

Keith took the plate and a fork from her and saw that it was a stack of pancakes. He felt warmth rush through him and he kept smiling. "Thanks, Mom!" As he sat there eating, his mother walked past the couch.

"I'm going out to the stores today," She said as she put on her shoes. "Do you need anything?"

Keith turned to watch his mom get ready to go out. "No, I'm good."

"Alright! Well, don't forget to do your chores while I'm gone! See you soon!" She waved bye to him and left the front door.

Another shot of pain hit his head. He dropped his fork on the floor and his plate fell onto his lap. "Ow! What the heck!?" He exclaimed. All of a sudden, he thought he heard someone calling to him: "Keith!"

He looked around, but no one else was there. No one was outside the house, no one was in the house with him. He was alone. "Keith!" The same voice came again and the pain his head did not go away this time.

"Stop it!" Keith yelled to no one.

But the voice he heard kept going: "Wake up, Keith!"

He fell back onto the couch and covered his eyes. "I am awake," He whimpered.

"Keith!" Lance yelled again. He had carefully gone down the slope to get to Allura and Keith.

"Lance!" Shiro called from above. "Be careful! They're wet! If you touch them, the water will—"

Lance paused. Shiro was right. How could they get to them then? As he clung to the wall of the crater, he looked down at Keith and Allura. His chest tightened. "Keith...Allura..." He said softly. "Okay!" He called up louder to Shiro, clearing his mind. "Tell me what do to then!"
