★Ayako★
"Ayako-chan!"
I wake up with alarm, sitting up instantly and I comb my hands through my hair quickly. Today is the day when I am allowed to go on a job for my first time, and I can't wait!
"Ayako-chan, are you ready yet?"
"I'm coming, Mum!" I shout, leaping out of bed and searching through my wardrobe. Warm day. Summer clothes. What should I wear?
No. That doesn't matter. I pull on a loose black t-shirt and a small purple skirt. "Are you coming to the guild today, Mum? Or what about you, Dad?"
They only respond about a minute later.
"Today's your day when you go on a job for the first time, Ayako-chan. Would you rather us come or do you want to feel even more independent?"
I grin, happy that Mum understands.
"What do you guess, Mum?"
"That you'd rather go independently?"
"Of course!"
After brushing my teeth and giving my hair a proper, quick brush, I run downstairs. My mum, (she's called Levy) and my dad (Gajeel) are waiting for my expectantly.
"Well I'll be off then. Yes, I know the way," I add quickly, just in case they offer to walk me to the guild. I'm going to be fifteen soon. I want to show that I can be independent.
Dad waves me off after asking me to get a good job. Nothing too difficult, he says, but a challenge would be good.
And of course I also have to choose a team to join me. Another two people at least.
I don't have two friends though. It's only really Maple, which is a surprise considering the fact that she's quite a shy, soft girl. Apparently I scare people off. No one really likes being around me in fear that I'm going to 'accidentally' kill them. I don't understand that, how could I possibly kill one of my guild members?
When I enter the guild, the first thing I do is greet Maple and ask her if she wants to do a job with me.
"It's my first day!" I explain with excitement. "I'm going to rock this job!"
"Yes, I am certain you will," Maple tells me with a gentle smile. "You're going to do so well. This is my first job as well."
The only problem with Maple is that she can get tired very easily, and every few hours has to go off somewhere to take a rest. I've never really understood why, and she doesn't seem willing to tell me. I'm used to it now anyway.
"Come on, let's go take a look at the board, Ayako," Maple suggests, gently holding onto my arm and leading me over. I stand here every day looking at all of the jobs in curiosity, jealous of the people who are allowed to do a job.
There are so many different jobs. Which one is relatively easy but has a good pay?
"Screw this!" I snap at no one in particular after staring at the board too long. "I don't even have a third team member! Let's go ask if anyone wants to join us first."
Maple agrees. She agrees to everything I say. Maybe that's the only reason I'm friends with her. But I do honestly care about her. She may be my only friend, but she's my best friend.
We ask almost everyone. We're wandering all over the guild hall, asking the other people if they want to join us on a job but no one seems willing to. They shied away from me when I get near, and whisper about me after I leave.
"I guess we'll just have to take a job as just us two," I tell Maple in the end. "Who really cares anyway? Two is fine. It's not like rules really matter, do they?"
"Well-" Maple is hesitant.
"Well?" I prompt, trying to sound more gentle this time.
"No, I agree with you." She gives me a sweet smile.
We ask to do a certain job including a bear. There's a bear who's causing havoc in a town, and we need to go and defeat it. Simple enough. However, we aren't allowed to go on our own.
"Come on!" I mutter. "It's my first job. It's easy, we don't need another person.."
I'm still not allowed. I storm away angrily. "Stupid jobs. Stupid people. Maple, should we just blackmail someone into joining us?"
"Ayako, that's taking it too far!"
"I know, I know, I'm joking." Not really. I'm only half joking.
Just as I'm about to give up, someone walks up to me.
Otachi.
"What do you want?" I ask. "What? Have you come to laugh at me?"
"No, it's not that." He shrugs awkwardly. "You need someone to accompany you, right?"
Is he suggesting...? No way.
"Go on," I tell him, feeling a spark of excitement.
"Do you want me to join you?" He shrugs again, looking solemn and a bit nervous but then he gives a strange smirk.
I hide my joy and instead give a sigh. "Well fine, if that's what you really want."
To my dismay, he doesn't give the reaction I was hoping. He seems to have barely noticed that I was trying to embarrass him.
"Yeah, it's going to be my first job too, so it'll be interesting."
"Did you never take jobs at your old guild?"
He glares at me, so I quickly clap a hand over my mouth in regret. I can't mention Otachi's parents or old life. He doesn't like talking about his family life much. However he just shrugs yet again.
"I just haven't been on any I guess." He doesn't tell me much but I decide not to pry any further. "Have you chosen a job yet?"
"Yeah, we've got this one." Maple and I show him what we chose. "And no, we are not changing it."
"Okay." He doesn't even look at it. "That seems like a good one."
Finally with permission, Otachi, Maple and I start leaving the guild, unable to believe that we're finally able to start a new adventure of our own and really test our magic.
