Choc-oh-lit

Day Three.

I woke up easily, rubbing my eyes before opening them. I looked around the room and remembered about work today.

They said they'd give me a waitressing T-Shirt there, so i pulled my legs into each side of some faded light blue jeans. I liked them because they were thinner than normal denim and didn't make me too hot. I also chose a black short sleeved shirt and black sandals.

I walked to the mirror with my face beating equipment and applied some soft red lipstick. I didn't want it to be too harsh, but i read that waitresses with red lips get bigger tips.

I also applied MAC concealer under my eyes and around the corners of my nose. Mascara, soft eyeliner, and brows were also a must. I was ready now.

8:12 the clock read.

I decide to stop by the motel's 'free breakfast' thing and grab a muffin and some coffee. I sat down on the hard plastic chair and took my time eating the muffin. After i was done, i began my walk through the roads that lead to the diner.

The ocean was to my right side the whole time. I couldn't help but fall in love with it all over again. I look around at the town itself. I saw an old couple holding hands and walking into a shop, a few children laughing and running, and a few straggling people by themselves. They were happy too though.

The town was a lot more beautiful than I'd like to admit. It felt happy, artsy, tropical, free... But one of the people walking around in town made me pause.

He was walking toward my direction while i stood there like an idiot on the street corner. He had cute hipster glasses and deep brown eyes with a wavy head of brown locks. They looked messy but in that i'm-not-trying-but-i-still-look-good type of way.

He looked up, and my eyes widened. Immediatly, i started walking, crossing the street. He followed me, which didn't scare me as much as it would if it were someone else. Eventually i just stopped and turned to him, furrowing my eyebrows. Why are you following me? My expression asked.

"I'm going to the diner up the road. I work there," he said.

I nodded and he took a step closer. I glared lightly at him, warning him to step away. I hated strangers being too close.

"How about you?" he asks smoothly.

"Same place as you."

I turn around and start walking, knowing where to go. He walked behind me, and we both got there to see Jasmine cleaning off some tables. A few families occupied the booths around the windows but not many at the tables.

"I see you've met Maverick. Mav, that's Evelyn," Jasmine says, looking up temporarily, continuing with the cleaning. Her bleach blonde hair hung around her face while she was hovering over the table.

He looks at me with a big goofy grin and offers his hand. I look down and shake his, which were quite soft, then go to check in for my shift. He does too. Jasmine throws me the red waitressing T-shirt. It reads "Carol's Diner" in big, white letters across the front. I walk to the bathroom and change, throwing Jasmine my other shirt to put behind her Hostess-stand-thing.

She hands me a pad of paper and a pen and gives me a 'good luck' smile.

Jasmine tells me theres a family waiting at table 5. I nod and pace over to them. Grinning widely, i ask them the typical i'm-a-waitress-and-i-want-a-tip question.

"Hello, i'm Evelyn and i'll be serving you today. What can i get you guys to drink?"

The little boy in the corner perks up and says, "I'll have a small glass of choc-oh-lit milk please," i laugh quietly at the way he said chocolate and write that down.

I look to the older woman beside him, who i assumed was the grandmother because of her prominent smile lines and fair amount of grey in her hair.

"A glass of orange juice is fine for me," she says, nodding once.

"Okay, I'll be back with that in a few minutes, and if you're ready to order by then, that'd be great," i say. I force another smile and walk away. They already had menus.

The day went on like that for another few hours. Maverick got off 30 minutes before me, apparently because he doesn't have a long shift on Monday (according to Jasmine.)

I grabbed my spare T-shirt from behind the host/hostess stand, checked if all my tips were still in my pocket, and walked out of the diner.

I was shocked to have just finished my shift and see Maverick sitting on the edge of the sidewalk.

"I thought you got off a while ago," i say bluntly. He shrugs and turns to face me, smiling that big goofy smile. That smile of his yelled it's own message. I have secrets too, it said, i'm not always like this.

"I did, but we don't get new people around here often. I wanted to make a new friend." His voice was low and slightly raspy, but he still sounded so happy.

I nodded in understanding and started walking back to the motel.

"Hey, hey, Evelyn. That's your name, right? Well, I didn't say i want to be your friend for nothing."

He shifted my arm with his index finger and middle finger, turning me towards him but not forcefully.

He grins again. "I want to make you love this town like i do. Where are you staying?"

Something inside of me was yelling at me. There he is! You found him! Trust him!

I huffed quickly and repeated my mother's words in my head.

"Evi, you need to try. That's it."

So i did.. Again. I told him i was staying at the motel, room 14 if he needed me, and that i already like his town.

"Yeah, but you need to love this town!" He says.

"Love's for suckers, maybe tomorrow I'll change my mind though."

I smile cheekily and walk backwards a few feet, then begin walking back to the motel, leaving Maverick there grinning like the loon i already knew he was.

God, his little rays of sunshine were rubbing onto me. I didn't know that stuff was contagious.

Yeah, you did find him, I mentally respond.
