Jasmine's house is your average country house. It's about 2 minutes away from the beach if you're driving. I rode back to Jasmine's house in the bed of the truck. Since everyone always walks everywhere in this ant-sized town, Jasmine was the only one with a truck.
She told me i could wear her clothes and she had spare toothbrushes.
The paint on the blue country house was chipping but it had a beautiful aesthetic. According to Maverick, who sat with me in the bed of the truck, Jasmine's room was in the basement.
Soon enough i found out her room was the basement, not just part of it. She had three full beds pushed together, i'm assuming for their group sleepovers, and she had a pool table, ping pong table, a mini fridge, a bathroom, and anything your average high school graduate would have. Different shades of blues and purples were scattered throughout the room.
"Welcome to the girl cave," Jasmine says confidently. She pulls me over to her dresser, handing me a spare toothbrush in packaging and some random pajamas from her middle drawer.
The boys, Grace, and Whitney get settled. The T.V is turned on before i can say thanks and then laughter is heard abruptly. I turn to the screen. Horror is clear across Jasmine's face while a porn tape of two girls and a boy is played on the full T.V.
Jasmine starts a dead sprint for the dvd player and turns it off as fast as possible.
"WHO DID THAT," Jasmine questions in a screech.
Alec starts laughing loudly and rolls off the bed. Jasmine jumps on top of him, and then Grace, and everyone but me and Maverick. He looks at me smiling and motions for me to come here.
When i get there, he pulls my hand and leads me to the staircase.
"I need to talk to you. We're going to the roof, if that's okay. We need to escape while they're distracted," he says, starting to pull me faster up the steps.
We end up on top of the roof, staring out onto a huge field. I'm not afraid of heights, but i think Maverick is. He insisted for me to not dangle my feet off the edge.
"So..." He says.
I look at him questioningly.
"I really think they like you. Jasmine always meets new people and tries to ease them into the group. They love you, though," he says, grinning and pushing his glasses up.
"Maybe it's cause i keep my mouth shut good," i suggest.
He nods. "Maybe."
"I also wanted to talk to you about why you're staying in a hotel. You could rent an apartment by now. People only stay in hotels if they're going to leave," he says, sadness coating his words.
"Maverick.. You don't understand. I can't afford it," I say.
"What I'm trying to say is, that if you talked to Jasmine, she could let you stay here."
I shook my head. "I'd rather be independent."
"I understand that, but there's nothing wrong with a little help."
At this point i was getting frustrated. I started to stand up, letting out an aggravated sigh. He stands up, too.
When i turn to climb back down the laddar, he holds my arm. Not forcefully, though. He's too gentle for that.
"Wait. Evelyn." I turn to him. "I just want you to be yourself with me. You can trust me," he says.
I furrow my eyebrows, resisting the urge to yell. "You don't know me," i shout. "I'm wanted by the police. They think i helped kill my best friend! You don't know anything about me, Maverick."
I stepped back and covered my mouth, realizing what i had said. He grins more.
"Let it out. That's all you have to do."
My eyes well up and i walk closer.
"How do i know i can trust you?" I ask. It's a dumb question because I already do. He grabs my forearm and steps a little bit closer. I try to play it cool and not let him see my watering eyes.
"Let it out," he says. I barely hear him. He pulls me down to sit with him.
Then, i explain everything. How i witnessed my only friend being murdered. How they think i was an accomplice, yet nothing from the evidence they have proves that. How Mom and Victoria forced me to run away until they realized they couldn't build a case.
He sits and listens. He was serious now, not wearing that bright, goofy smile. He grabs my hand when i start to cry, and laughs at the parts where funny things happen.
When I'm done telling him, we sit there for a few minutes.
"Apparently they're not looking for us," I say.
"I'm not surprised," he says, "the boys are probably watching the rest of that porno and the girls are probably asleep. Or Whitney and Alec are doing it in the bathroom. They're friends with benefits. Everyone knows."
I laugh quietly. I knew something was going on between them. We were still sitting up on the roof, and i felt extremely relieved now.
"You're not gonna tell anyone, are you?"
"No," he says. I believe him.
He laughs and i smile slightly.
"Lets go back down," he says, standing up.
We head back to the basement. He told me about how Jasmine's parents moved into a different house after her dad won the lottery, so they gave this one to Jasmine when she graduated.
After changing into Jasmine's way-too-loose pajamas and brushing my teeth, i pull my dark, curly hair into a ponytail on the back of my head. I splash some lukewarm water on my face and wipe off any eye makeup.
When i walk out of the bathroom, i see Grace and Jasmine in one bed, Alec and Whitney in another, and Francisco on the last one. Sebastian decided to sleep on the floor because apparently he'll never sleep with a guy.
I settle for the couch in front of the big flat screen and Maverick sleeps on the carpet beside the couch i'm sleeping on. I feel kind of guilty but decide to leave it since i haven't known Maverick that long.
"Evelyn?" He asks, as i start to fall asleep.
"Hmm?"
"Thank you."
And everything goes dark.
