Chapter 4:
Initiation
We got to the main square, which is basically a fairly large clearing, in-between the main alleys where all initiations start. In the distance I saw Dodge, the lads and Remy plus Mr. Ailsbury. Everything was like a ghost town, not the normal hustle bustle, because everybody was out working; stealing wallets or wipes. I departed from the company of Charlie and went up to Dodge, who embraced me in a rather tight squeeze.
“Uh, Dodge, losing the ability to breath here” I gasped.
“Oh, sorry” he said almost as quickly as he let me go. I smiled at him.
“It’s ok” I said brightly. Dodge grinned at me and took my arm, the one with the red marks and frowned when he saw them.
“What are these?” he asked me seriously
“What?” I said trying to sound innocent. “Oh, them. Just me and Charlie goofing around”
“Charlie?” Dodge said surprised as he raised his eyebrows.
“It was an accident Dodge, honestly” I gave him a huge smile. “I hope you teach that frenchie a lesson Dodge!” I beamed falsely, trying to turn the attention away from my arm.
“Don’t worry Tal, I will” he smiled at me “he should be pretty tuckered out what with his dealings last night”
“Yeah” I said trying to sound hopeful, but I could not help feel a small pang of sympathy for Remy even after all he did. He was going down. Mr. Ailsbury called the boys to the centre of the clearing, we all followed. Charlie pulled up a crate for me to sit on in the side lines. But before anything could happen I had to speak to Remy, he had to know the rules.
“Ah, belle. Coming to say sorry to me eh?” he smiled mischievously.
“Sorry? Why do I have to be sorry?” I asked astounded.
“For my rather rude awakening” he grinned, I playfully punched him on the arm.
“You’re still cleaning it up” I said. Remy just shrugged.
“Whatever”
“You...You do know how to fight don’t you?” I asked him uneasily. If he didn’t know how to fight, it would be almost as bad as one of Dodges sorting outs. Remy raised an eyebrow at me playfully.
“Yes. Why? You afraid your boyfriends gonna hurt me?” he teased.
There was that word again. Boyfriend. The word that should be banned from the English language.
“Maybe you should be more afraid for your Boyfriend Belle. I am quite the fighter.” He continued
“Your full of yourself ‘aren’t you?” I asked him arrogantly.
“No, just used to being the best” he replied. Mr Ailsbury interrupted us and told Remy that he needed to go into the centre of the make-shift ring.
“Do I get an embrasser for good luck?” he asked turning back to me with a smirk.
“What in the world is anembrasser?” I demanded. I hated him using French I did not know, he could be saying anything about me and I would not have the faintest idea!
He leaned in close to me. A little too close for comfort.
“I’ll give you one clue belle” he replied as he stroked my hair behind my ear. That feeling of panic started up in me again but this time with a vengeance since we were in public.
