Six.
(Luke's POV)
She's doing it again. She's complaining how hurt she was bleh bleh. I'm sick of this shit! I want it to end quick and get rid of her. She shoved me into the janitor's closet right after the bell rang.
"You know what? Stop trying to be the gentleman to Melanie and spare a glance at me would you? It seems like putting the curse on you was a mistake." She crossed her arm over her chest and sighed in anger.
I didn't say a word and leaned on the side of a wooden shelf, full of detergents. I raised an eyebrow and gave her a mocking look.
"Say something! Say that you love me! Look, I can't break the curse because I was the one who set it on you. It's okay," She shrugged. "Go settle things with Melanie, break the curse, and live with me happily."
"And what? Hurt her? You know I don't mind living in hell, because what's the difference between hell and looking at your face right now? The thing is, Melanie is out of the picture! Know that. She shouldn't be involved in the first place and she doesn't deserve all of this."
"You ungrateful boy! I am more than willing to give myself to you, and what about her? She barely even knew you and do you even think you stand a chance with her?"
Her eyes began to glow purple and her skin tone was turning slightly pale yellow. I could tell she was trying her best to restrain herself from shifting.
"Look, if your main reason to attend school here is to ruin an innocent person's life and feelings, I suggest you fuck off asap. You're the one creating trouble for yourself! If it wasn't for your freaking ego, none of this would happen!"
I started to raise my voice and stood up straighter.
"You're never going to succeed. I'm going to guarantee that." Her voice was low and vicious. She sounded intimidating, I admit, but I could shift right now and rip her throat out. But of course, there are consequences to face for killing a witch. Says the Celestial Court. The court made all the rules about immortals and its kinds.
"Try me. I'm going to make her fall in love with me and this god damn curse will be lifted and you, you disgusting possessive little bitch will be out of my life for good." My voice was emotionless yet determined. I sensed her eyes softened and she sounded desperate all of a sudden.
"What's in her that's not in me? Huh? Look at me! I can be who you want me to be if you just try to love me. I'm not asking for anything else, just your love."
She clung on to my forearm like it was her only survival route. Her voice cracked a little. She looked so broken for once. I did feel sorry for her, but what can I do? I can't love her back and if I tried to, I'd be hurting myself.
"I can't, Mari," I called her nickname."If I do so, I wouldn't be myself, neither would you. Both of us would be lying to ourselves and I hate that."
I spoke to her softly, hoping she'd understand. She stood still for a while, before loosening her grip on me. She backed off and looked down. I sighed but jolted up in a second, hearing murmurs from outside the janitor's closet. I realized the door wasn't fully closed and I feared someone would've been listening to our conversation.
Mariam seemed to notice too, as she looked at the gap of the door which was the only source of lighting in here. She wiped her tears and turned to leave the janitor's closet. I followed closely behind her and soon the brightness of the corridor blinded me for a moment. Nobody was around indicating I must've missed the bell.
Melanie...
I hope she wasn't mad at me again for bailing on her the second time. Leaving her walking alone in the school corridor with that horrible scum Colton glued to her tail set the fire in me. Sometimes I wonder why I've been worrying more than I should, and caring excessively towards Melanie. I just hope I wouldn't fall for her. I would only be hurting her.
