NEW CLASSMATE

Tuesday 10:00 amTHREE TIMES A WEEK, I get to be in one of my favorite classes, Spanish class. Taking a foreign language is highly recommended in my major, so I decided the best language to learn would be Spanish. It's easier for me to remember than Japanese or languages that use symbols. It looks cool, but I can't do it.
People were still coming into class. I recognized everyone until someone new came in. I watched as they walked over to the professor. The two of them talked until I saw my professor pointing up to where I was sitting.
Nooo, please. I don't want someone to sit next to me; I'm fine where I am. The girl walked up to my aisle and sat on the left side of me. I realized I knew her from the basketball team. I believe her name starts with an F or something. Either way, I didn't have any intentions of talking to her or making her my best friend.
"Today, you guys have it easy. We'll be summarizing the last unit for your test at the end of this week." Our professor spoke as she put up slides, speaking about each one. I took basic notes on my laptop so I could go back and write them in my notebook.
I was focused on getting the main points down since those were the ones in bullet points on the slides. Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder, making me jump slightly from the unexpected touch. "Sorry," the girl smiled apologetically. Do you have a pencil?"
Why don't people come to class prepared? I grabbed my pencil pouch from Amazon, which has different compartments and zippers. Without saying anything, I pulled out a blue mechanical pencil and handed it to her.
"Thanks" she said taking the pencil from my hand, I smiled lightly and nodded my head.
After I went back to taking my notes, I heard her whispering to me again, "What's your name?"
I sighed internally as I grabbed my post-it notes and wrote down my name. 'Luna :)' was written on the post-it before I slid it over to her. As I typed, the girl passed the post-it back to me.
The new note said, 'Cute name. I'm Flau'jae :).' I turned to her and gave her a quick smile. I knew her name started with an F.
Our professor continued with the slides before having us do some sample questions on the test. They were multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. They were all easy for me, but I read about five chapters ahead of time before the course started and kept reading ahead. Oh well.
In the corner of my eye, I noticed Flau'jae took the post-it note and started writing on it again. She seemed to be writing a lot, so I focused on our professor, who was giving the correct answers to the projector. Sneakily, Flau'jae slid the pad to me, 'I remember you from the game. You did really good'. I smiled automatically at the compliment on my tumbling skills. It's nice to hear good comments about something you put effort into.
12:00 pm
My second class got canceled, so I decided to walk around campus. LSU has a big campus, so I walked around the main part where most of my classes and resources were. I had my AirPods in, enjoying the slightly vacant space since most classes were ongoing. The weather was nice—it was a beautiful day, actually. The sun was out, which made it warm, but the mild breeze kept things balanced.
I walked near the cafe and library and saw Yaslin sitting outside the cafe on her MacBook. My mood brightened from seeing my best friend. I walked a little faster to reach her, but Yaslin didn't notice me until I sat down in front of her. "Luna!" Her eyes brightened, and she closed her MacBook. " Why aren't you in class?"
"Got canceled," I shrugged before I rested my arms and head on the table, "watcha doinn?"
Yaslin giggled from me, quoting Isabella, "I was editing my recent vlog," she explained.
I hummed in response, and a silence fell upon us. It wasn't awkward; we were both enjoying the weather and the day. "Wanna go to the library?" Yaslin asked, knowing that's my favorite place on campus besides my dorm. Mmm, I don't know," I contemplated, but the library ended up winning. Yeah, let's go," I said, getting up from my chair. Yaslin nodded, packing her computer away before we walked to the library.
"One of the basketball girls transferred to my Spanish class," I whispered to Yaslin as we went to our favorite spot in the library. It was in the back, where rarely anybody knew about it.
"Really?" My best friend questioned, looking surprised, "who?"
We set our bags on the coffee table before sitting in our respective seats. "Flau'jae Johnson," I replied, lying down on the full-sized couch.
"She's friends with Angel, no?" Yaslin looked at me with a smirk on her face. I side-eyed her, not knowing why she was asking. "I don't know. I'm not on the basketball team," I rolled my eyes.
"Well, obviously," Yaslin rolled her eyes overdramatically, making me giggle. Flau'jae could be your way to Angel," she said, looking over to me. I shook my head. It's a crazy idea. I don't want to use someone just to get to who I like.
"That feels morally wrong" I declined
Yaslin shrugged, getting on her phone, "Just something to about it."
I didn't want to consider it or even make it an option. It seems like too much work anyway; imagine I play the long game and befriend Flau'jae just so that Angel will still not notice me. It's too much of a risk, I like being on the side lines and shadows. Im not sure if Angel even likes girls; I never heard anything about her being interested in women or anyone she's been with romantically. No confession, no rejection.
