Johanna’s POV
“Why so glum?”
I glanced up at Ivan and watched as he took a seat beside me at the bar. Like any vampire, Ivan was drop dead gorgeous. He had short, silky blonde hair and light green eyes. He had on a dark coat and pants which is usual attire for most vampires. He was pale as expected, but it was normal around here seeing as it was almost seventy degrees out nowadays.
I felt a little relief that he’d chose a human bar this time instead of a vampire one. I didn’t have to try to look as if I wasn’t talking to him or anything. We could talk openly, in hushed tones of course.
Rolling my eyes, I took another swig of my drink. “I’m guessing it’s obvious.”
“Yeah.” He smirked. “You’re slipping, love. You used to hide your emotions so well.”
I answered him with silence. He knows how I don’t like to talk about anything else except what we have to. It makes things too personal and I can’t afford to get personal with a vampire.
Informant or not.
“Raziel is going to be at the Plaza tonight at eleven.” He told me, breaking the agonizing silence. “Do you know where that is?”
I nodded. Of course I knew where it was. I knew this city like the back of my hand. “Anything else?”
He stared at me. It seemed as though he was trying to figure me out. Then a small grin appeared on his full lips. “Nothing else.”
“Alright.” I slapped a ten dollar bill on the bar for my drink and got to my feet.
Before I walked away, Ivan grabbed my arm. His chilling green eyes bore into mine. “You know, not all vampires are bad.”
I snatched my arm away briskly, almost as if touching him burned me. I didn’t even bother to look at him as I made my way out of the building.
Vampires aren’t all that bad? Of course he’d say that since he’s a vampire, I told myself as I walked into Kevin’s apartment. I shut the door behind me and spotted him sitting in front of his computer screens. His brown hair looked disheveled as if he’d just got out of bed. He still had on his boxers and the t-shirt he’d gone to bed in. I realized he must have been working all day.
“Hey, Jo.” He said, not looking up once.
“Hey.” I sighed out and made my way over, taking a seat at the edge of the computer table beside him. I looked at the three large screens, trying to understand exactly what was on it. “Find anything yet?”
“Nope. It’s pretty tricky to find Diablos.” He muttered and typed in something. On the right screen, a map appeared. Kevin raised a finger and pointed to a spot with a red dot. “Right here is the most recent attack. A woman found dead in an alley here.” He said.
I felt anger build up inside me. Always in the alleys.
Kevin clicked something else, causing the screen to zoom out. He now had a large picture of New York City on the map.
“What about the other red dots?” I asked, noticing that many more red dots appeared. That can’t be…
“More attacks.” He confirmed. “There’s no pattern. If there were a lot of them at one place, then maybe we’d have something to go on in finding Diablos. But these are all random. I have no idea where to start.”
