Chapter 3

Johanna’s POV

Ivan was gone by morning. Kevin and Selena didn’t even have to argue with me about letting him stay. I didn’t want him there as much as they did, especially since I found out he ratted me out to Dmitri.

I leaned against the kitchen counter, staring at Kevin who sat on the table across from me. I explained to him everything that happened last night with the kidnapped girls. “What exactly do you think is going on?”

“I think they’re using them for something.” I told him. “They could’ve killed all four of them there, but they didn’t. They took them.”

Kevin rubbed at his chin. “Using them for what though?”

I pressed my lips together. “They could be doing what they used to do a couple of centuries ago?”

He got to his feet this time, eyes wide at my suggestion. “You mean slavery, Jo?”

“I’m afraid so. I mean, they took three girls, Kevin.” I said. “And it could’ve been four if I hadn’t been there. Since when have they done that?”

“Okay, so what if you’re right?” He started. “Why now would they start it up again? I doubt the Council has any word of this.”

“I don’t think so either.” I added quietly. I wonder if the vampire Council does have any idea what’s going on. I haven’t heard anything the Original family leaders in almost a year. There are five of them, Diablos being the head of the Council as he has been for centuries.

“Where do you think they took them?” Kevin asked me.

“I wish I knew. I—“

I heard the shuffling of feet beside me and turned to the hallway. The girl was there with her arms wrapped around herself. She looked like she was shivering even though we’d given her sweatpants and a sweater after she cleaned up last night.

Looking at her now, I could tell she was beautiful. She was one of those girls that all of the girls would envy at school. Not that I would know at firsthand experience of course… But she had blonde hair and blue eyes. She was short, no more than five foot five probably.

“Are you okay?” I asked softly, taking a step towards her. She nodded and let me guide to a seat at the table.

Kevin took a seat across from her. “Do you remember anything that happened to you?”

The girl drew her knees to her chest and shook her head. “Do you have anything to eat?” She whispered.

I wandered through the aisles in search of angel-haired pasta. I’d already gotten the pancake mix, eggs, and bacon for breakfast. Now, I just need the Chicken Alfredo ingredients for dinner.

After I realized that we didn’t have food back at the apartment, I demanded that I go out and get some food for everyone. I can’t believe that Kevin never thought about food for the house. Chips and candy just doesn’t cut it all the time.

Besides, I wanted to go out. Even though I hide my face when I fight, I still never bother to go out unless I’m hunting. It felt pretty good finally getting out with two stakes and a gun in my pocket.
