--"Harry! What are you doing here so late?" Hagrid rushed towards Harry, helping him up.
Ron, who had been hiding behind the counter, got up. "Bloody hell Hagrid, you've been practising.""Ron! Is Hermione here too an all?"
"Good to see your magic improving Hagrid." Hermione said as she brushed dust off herself.
Hagrid embraced the three. Despite the trio being fully grown, he was still able to consume them all into a warm hug. "Its been a while! Sorry about the magic, thought you were intruders.""Hardly! Anyway, we should be going, it was great to see you -" Harry began indicating to the others that they should leave before Hagrid began to inquire.
"Not so fast. You still didn't tell what you're all doing here at this time– and dont try lyin to me, I'll know an' all. Is something wrong?""Nothing you should worry about. We'll sort it out." Hermione joined Harry at the door.
They looked back, waiting for Ron.
"Maybe he can help?"
"Help with what? You're making me worried, Ron whats goin on?"
"We've been having a few problems recently." Ron said, sighing. So much for not telling Hagrid.
Reluctantly, Harry and Hermione sat back down as Hagrid made more butterbeers.
--
"Well do you know who it is?"
"That's quite the point Hagrid – we dont know who it is." Hermione gulped the last of her butterbeer.
"Right well I have one suggestion – stay here for a bit." The trio looked at Hagrid as if had just slapped them.
"No. Were not endangering the kids Hagrid.""So what you gonna do? Let yourselves be in danger? No, Im not havin it. You're stayin' here."
Hermione smiled, putting her hand on Hagrids arm. "Hey, dont worry about us! We can look after ourselves." Hagrid smiled, but still looked nervous.
"If need be we'll come! But right now, hiding out here isn't what we – or the kids – need. What they need is to continue as usual, so don't go telling them. And as for us, we have a plan to catch them."
"Well I'm going to trust you on this one Mione, because I dont like doubting you – but I'm always here, and rest assured the kids will be fine. You have my word. Now get back before everyone comes stormin in here!"
Just at that moment, a distant clock chimed 2am. Setting aside their glasses, the trio got up, and hugged Hagrid in turns, and left, all promising to return soon and let him know what was going on. Once all being greeted with the cold morning air, the three apparated, breaking the pristine morning silence.
They appeared outside Hermione and Rons house in sync. As they looked up, they saw the lights were on. Harry immediately ran towards the door, wand in hand. Just before entering the house, Harry turned to face the two.
"We finish this now. You hear me? We dont let them leave. Whatever it takes."
There was a flash in his eyes – his sensitivity was gone, his pity for those who lived without love and his reasoning. Hermione and Ron nodded silently. They hadn't seen that look before - not for a while anyway.
Harry ran in, silently yet quickly. He was soon followed by Ron, who held Hermiones hand as she walked beside him. Someone was definitely upstairs.
Yet something felt wrong, Hermione thought as she crept up the carpeted stairs.
She was walking in her own house, yet it felt foreign, new. She felt no advantage to the invader, despite them being in her own environment. It was almost as if they wanted to be found, almost as if they knew that they were on the stairs, ready to burst in at any second..
