Jayden Holden:
She was incredibly energetic and happy…it seemed as though nothing could faze her. I pause the game hearing her phone go off. She pouted at me before I tossed it to her and she sighed. It had been a week since the incident.
I listened to her side of the conversation. “Hey…yeah, I am fine now…there is no need, really…please don’t…I am well aware I shouldn’t have done it…yeah…whatever…no, Sam and Jayden found me…okay…I will…love you too…bye.” Her mood seemed instantly crushed as she ended the call. I moved to the floor and sat next to her.
I asked, “You wanna talk about it?” We had become close like before I had moved when we were little. I hadn’t realized how much I missed her until shortly after she got here. She was the only stable thing in my childhood.
She mumbled, “Just Jake and his usual little rant about me trying to kill myself and telling me I need to call dad.” A sigh passed her lips and I think it was obvious she was trying not to cry as she looked up and blinked rapidly.
I said, “How is he?”
She gave me a weak smile, “Let’s find out.” She picked up her phone and punched in the number before putting it on speaker phone. It took us forever before they finally transferred her call to his room.
Paul: Hello?
Ally: Daddy? [She sounds so broken.]
Paul: Allison? [He coughed]
Ally: Yeah, it’s me…how are you?
Paul: To be honest I feel like an old man. [He laughed lightly]
Ally: [Also laughed lightly] Yeah, because 40 is really old.
Paul: Samantha doesn’t think so
Ally: Really? Who is Samantha?
Paul: A nice lady that works here, she asked me out on a date to the cafeteria.
Ally: [She had a shocked tone] Really? How was it?
Paul: I turned it down.
Ally: Mom? [She had the most annoyed tone]
Paul: I love her, Allison, we have been over this.
Ally: Yeah I know.
Paul: Well, then accept it!
[Long silence]
Ally: So how are my boys? [A jealous ping was struck inside me]
Paul: Jake comes and visits me every day. Ethan doesn’t want to though. I think it is because he doesn’t want to accept it. I wish you were here.
Ally: I wish I were there too. If I was…maybe I could have noticed the signs better.
Paul: Uh-uh, don’t go blaming yourself for this, Allison. You know you have no control over it. [A few tears slipped and went down her face] I didn’t want the boys telling you about it for this reason.
Ally: [Anger] So what? They were just going to tell me when you died and I was being rushed home to attend your funeral.
Paul: No, Sonny, you know-[She cut him off]
Ally: Oh yeah, mom wouldn’t let me come back. That’s right. She will probably send me to a stupid orphanage after you die anyway.
Paul: Stop it, Allison! [He sounded angry as well] I cannot stand by and listen to you talk about your mother that way. She is a good person and she helped create you so you better be damn fucking happy to have her. [I was shocked; I haven’t ever heard him cuss.]
