Lainy took my hand. It might have looked a bit strange, a five year old girl leading a random teenager to who knows where. Her grip tightened as she maneuvers around the crowd. She pushed open the doors of a coffee shop, a little bell greeting her.

A young man, probably in his mid thirties, smiled at her. She skipped over to him, he scooped her up and sat her in his lap. "Who's this?" He asked, still smiling. Lainey looked over at me. "What's your name?" I chuckle. "Kate."

Lainey looked back over to the man, her big brown eyes filled with pity. "She's lost, daddy." Her father frowned. "Where are your parents?" I bit my lip. "I'm in foster care, my foster father didn't come home last night." I lie. Honestly, I wish that was true. I would sound a lot less crazy than "I probably murdered my drug addict foster father with my magic powers." He scratched his head, probably wondering what to do.

After what seemed like a eternity of silence he reached across his two-person table. He grabbed a dark gray flip-phone. He popped it open with his thumb, and typed an all-too familiar number. Social services. I glance at Lainey, who was staring at her dad's phone with a frown. She opened her mouth say something, but she was cut of by the sounds of sirens wailing, its cry getting louder with each passing second. A white and red blur shot passed the window, two more following a second later.

Lainey hugged her dad closer. I sigh as the trucks pass, probably for Berns. The conversation in the coffee shop shifted, now conversations were louder. The tv flicked on, the scene of a reporter at Berns house with police tape surrounding the house filled the screen.

"Berns Cole died in his home after he took an overdose of painkillers. While the police searched the house, they found another room, presumably a girl in her early teens. She has not yet been found." I didn't know whether to gasp or scoff. They had obviously lied, they didn't know anything.

Lainey's dad shook his head. "Poor kid, hope they find her soon." He clicked the call button, and brought the phone up to his ear. He held the phone to his ear with his shoulder, and set Lainey down. I heard muffled voices talking on the other end. I glance around the shop. Even though no one was paying me any attention whatsoever, I was still embarrassed.

"Yeah. I'm at the coffee shop on river tree road." I sighed and sat down across from him. "Her name is Kate- one second." He held his hand to the microphone. I leaned forward. "Gwin." I half-whispered. He nodded. "Her name is Kate Gwin." His face twisted into a look of confusion, then shock. "Y-yeah." He stuttered, after a minute he hung up, and dialed a different number. "I've found Berns Cole's foster daughter."
